5 new movies to watch in July, including Deadpool & Wolverine

Chris Tilly

Here’s a preview of all the major new movies releasing in July, including Twisters, Longlegs, Despicable Me 4, and Deadpool & Wolverine.

June gave us a Western in the shape of Kevin Costner’s Horizon. A biker movie via The Bikeriders. And a gigantic animated blockbuster through Pixar’s Inside Out 2.

June has a similarly varied spread of genres thanks to another animated sequel, a pair of eagerly anticipated horror movies, and a superhero team-up that could make a billion.

So, looking ahead, the following are our picks of the movies hitting screens this month in chronological order, followed by a list of every new film releasing in cinemas in July, plus a preview of August.

Despicable Me 4

Release Date: July 3, 2024

Despicable Me and its Minions spinoff make up the most financially successful animated franchise of all-time. So expectations are inevitably high for the fourth film in the central series. Especially as White Lotus creator Mike White is co-scripting, and Will Ferrell is joining the voice cast as the film’s villain.

The story sees Gru and his family welcoming a new baby – Gru Jr. – and being forced on the run. Despicable Me 4 also features the debut of multiple amped up secret agent Mega-Minions.

MaXXXine

Release Date: July 5, 2024

Ti West’s widely acclaimed X trilogy kicked off with the Texas Chain Saw-style horror in the original X, followed by more melodramatic scares in Pearl. MaXXXine completes the circle via a neon-lit slice of 1980s sleaze.

Having survived the events of X, Maxine Minx is pursuing stardom on LA’s sunset strip, as the same time that serial killer the Night Stalker is on his murderous rampage. Mia Goth once again stars, while support comes from Kevin Bacon, Elizabeth Debicki, and Halsey.

Longlegs

Release Date: July 12, 2024

Longlegs is a serial killer thriller from the twisted mind of Osgood Perkins, whose previous credits include The Blackcoat’s Daughter, and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House.

Scream queen Maika Monroe is an FBI agent investigating a series of murders linked to the occult, and Nicolas Cage plays her prime suspect, while the insane Longlegs marketing campaign has horror fans jazzed for this one.

Twisters

Release Date: July 19, 2024

Twisters is a very belated sequel to the original Twister, which revolved around storm-chasers, and became a box office smash in the summer of 1996.

Here, Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones are on the tail of the tornadoes, while the action plays out on the open plains of Oklahoma. Minari director Lee Isaac Chung oversees the chaos.

Deadpool & Wolverine

Release Date: July 26, 2024

Deadpool & Wolverine is the biggest superhero movie of the year, and might end of being the most successful film of 2024. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman star as the titular comic book characters, while D&W is rumored to be filled with cameos from other heroes and villains.

The story is triggered by the Time Variance Authority, so expect multiverse action, and even a potential soft reset for the Marvel Cinematic Universe that could have far-reaching consequences for future movies.
