Top Boy Season 5 launched on Netflix today, but will there be a Season 6 of the gritty British crime drama?

Set on a fictional council estate in London’s Hackney, Top Boy revolves around a pair of drug dealers – Dushane (Ashley Walters) and Sully (Kane Robinson).

Season 1 launched on Channel 4 in 2011, to much critical acclaim, followed by Season 2 in 2013. Which is where the show would have ended, had Netflix not stepped in.

The streamer announced it was reviving Top Boy in 2017, and Season 3 dropped in 2019, followed by Season 4 in 2022. This brings us up the the present day, with Season 5 launching on Netflix this week. But is that the end of the story?

Will there be a Top Boy Season 6 on Netflix?

No, there will not be a Season 6 of Top Boy. The makers of the show – as well as the cast – have all said that Season 5 is where the story ends. While underneath the official trailer, Netflix states that this is “the final chapter.”

In an interview conducted before the actor’s strike, Ashley Walters told GQ that Netflix: “wanted to go on forever, and Kane and I were like [groans] personally, we can’t. We don’t think it’s the right thing to do. It may have gone on too long anyway.

“Not that it’s not been great and the seasons have all been great and everyone’s loved them and I’ve loved them, [but] I like to end on a high.”

Director William Stefan Smith echoed this sentiment in an interview with the Royal Television Society, stating: “It’s the British way. Historically, British shows end early. We don’t push them into six or seven seasons.”

In the same interview, actor Jasmine Jobson – who plays gang member Jaq – says: “We’re showing the public that there’s only so far you can go. You can end up in prison, you can end up dead, but every top boy has to come to a stop at some point. You don’t see 60 or 70-year-old top boys, unless it’s the mafia. So I feel like we’re doing the right thing.”
