Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event: Shadow Kyogre, Varoom debut, & more

The Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event brings new Shadow Pokemon, exclusive bonuses, and so much more. So, learn everything about the villain’s return with our full guide.

Just when Pokemon Go fans thought it was safe to head back outside, those troublemakers Team Rocket are back with a vengeance. Team Rocket leader Giovanni has a new Pokemon on his team, and even the grunts are getting a major shakeup in this latest event.

Pokemon fans will want to keep an eye on the event, as alongside the inclusion of some fresh Shadow ‘mon, players can also now battle for the chance to earn a Shiny shadow Ho-Oh in Pokemon Go Shadow Ho-oh Raid Weekend, among many other new treats.

Pokemon Go Taken Treasures start date & time

The Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event is set to run from Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 12:00 AM local time, until Thursday, February 1, 2024, at 11:59 PM local time.

Pokemon Go Taken Treasures Shadow Kyogre debut

Team Rocket leader Giovanni is getting a powerful new member in his team, with the arrival of Shadow Kyogre. Niantic explains that the last part of the Season Special Research story can be unlocked at the beginning of the Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event.

Players can progress through the Special Research Story to receive a Super Rocket Radar and face Giovanni in battle. If players can beat him, they will be rewarded with an encounter with Shadow Kyogre.

Pokemon Go Taken Treasures Varoom debut

The Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event also introduces Varoom and Revavroom to the game. Players will have a chance to hatch Varoom from 12 km eggs as soon as the event begins, to then evolve it into Revavroom once they gather 50 Varoom Candy.

Currently, Shiny Varoom is not available.

Pokemon Go Taken Treasures new Shadow Pokemon

Both the Team Rocket grunts and the Team Rocket leaders Sierra, Cliff, and Arlo, are all getting new Shadow Pokemon to power up their team. While we wait for more information on the exact changes to the leader’s team, the following Pokemon will be introduced in their Shadow form for the first time:

  • Corpish
  • Snorunt
  • Chimchar
  • Piplup
  • Croagunk
  • Dwebble
  • Ferroseed

Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event bonuses

During the Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event, players can enjoy the following bonuses:

  • Team GO Rocket will appear more frequently at Poke Stops and in balloons.
  • Players can use a Charged TM to help a Shadow Pokemon forget the Charged Attack Frustration.

Pokemon Go Taken Treasures Field Research rewards

The Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event will also include event-themed Field Research tasks, and players that complete these can earn Mysterious Components, Charged TMs, Fast TMs, and encounter event-themed Pokemon.

Keep in mind that Pokemon encountered as the result of clearing a Field Research task have a higher chance of appearing in their Shiny form than Pokemon encountered in the wild.

Pokemon Go Taken Treasures paid Timed Research

For the Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event, Niantic is releasing a new Paid Timed Research, costing $5.00 (or equivalent price in local currency) so players can access event-exclusive Timed Research.

Players can complete the Taken Treasures Paid Timed Research to unlock the following:

  • Additional Stardust and XP
  • One Incense
  • One Incubator
  • Three Silver Pinap Berries
  • Encounters with event-themed Pokemon
  • An exclusive event-themed avatar pose
  • And more

To earn the rewards, tasks must be completed and players must redeem each reward before the Pokemon Go Taken Treasures event ends on Thursday, February 01, 2024, at 11:59 PM local time.
