Gege Akutami has revealed his inspiration for Choso’s appearance in Jujutsu Kaisen — and it’s a bit surprising, to say the least.

The Jujutsu Kaisen Official Guidebook has a lot of information from the manga’s author, Gege Akutami, regarding his characters. Along with his revelation about Toji’s influence on Geto, he also shared what inspired him to give Choso his particular appearance.

Akutami revealed Choso’s character design is inspired by a fashion model he once saw. Choso is the eldest of the nine Cursed Paintings, as well as the brother of Eso and Kechizu and half-brother of Yuji.

However, unlike the other two Cursed Paintings, Choso looks completely human. Speaking of Choso’s appearance, Akutami also mentioned that the appearance of the Cursed Paintings or any cursed object can depend on the vessel they are incarnated into.

However, if a vessel is too strong or willful, they resist the cursed object and retain their own appearances. This is what happened with Yuji and Sukuna. But the humans the Cursed Paintings were incarnated into were so weak that there were almost remnants of them. That means the appearances of Choso and his brothers are their own.

The author clarified that just like appearance, a cursed object also gets their general knowledge about the world from their vessel. Choso got his general knowledge from his vessel, just like Sukuna got his from Yuji.

According to the Jujutsu Kaisen Official Fanbook, Choso’s skills are Blood Manipulation: Slicing Exorcism, Convergence, Piercing Blood, Supernova, Flowing Red Scale, Flowing Red Scale: Stack, Blood Meteorite, and Blood Edge. All of these are techniques derived from Choso’s innate cursed technique.

Choso’s favorites are his younger brothers, while the one he dislikes Noritoshi Kamo, or Kenjaku, to be more accurate. Choso is a popular character in Jujutsu Kaisen and is considered one of the better-looking characters in the series by fans. Akutami’s interview vindicated their belief and made Choso’s model-like appearance canon.
