Agatha All Along: Everything we know about the MCU series

Kathryn Hahn as Marvel's Agatha Harkness

Yes, it was Agatha All Along, or at least that’s what the MCU wants you to think. Kathryn Hahn’s sinister witch, Agatha Harkness, is returning in her own series to kick off 2024’s Halloween season.

Agatha Harkness spawned plenty of memes and a hit pop song during her WandaVision, but now she gets her own spin-off series, Agatha All Along, which promises plenty of witchy hijinks and a horror movie tone.

When we last left Agatha back in Westview, New Jersey, she had been trapped by the chaos magic of the now-deceased Wanda Maximoff, aka the Scarlet Witch. She believed herself to be a stereotypical suburban housewife, but would that illusion hold after Wanda’s death?

Agatha All Along promises fans a deeper dive into her history and the history of witchcraft in the MCU when it releases on Disney+. But what other mysteries might be held in store?

Is there a release date for Agatha All Along?

Agatha All Along debuts with a two-episode premiere on September 18.

In addition to the premiere date, Marvel Studios confirmed a new title: Agatha All Along, a nod to Wandavision’s chart-topping song. In a previous interview, series star Kathryn Hahn had teased Agatha might even have multiple new songs for viewers to get stuck in their heads.

The teaser pays homage to the show’s myriad of previous titles: Coven of Chaos, House of Harkness, and Darkhold Diaries. It also adds a new one, The Lying Witch With Great Wardrobe.

We also know that the show is set to have nine episodes in total.

Speaking with Vanity Fair, Agatha All Along star Patti LuPone confirmed this episode count, stating that “all nine scripts” for the show “were written before [they] started” filming.

Agatha All Along cast: Who’s in it, and are there any new characters?

Kathryn Hahn will be returning as the titular witch Agatha. She’s joined by a number of new characters, adding more of a supernatural flavor to the MCU.

Agatha All Along cast:

  • Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness
  • Aubrey Plaza as Rio Vidal
  • Joe Locke as Billy Kaplan
  • Pattie LuPone as Ilia Calderu
  • Sasheer Zamata as Jennifer Kale
  • Ali Ahn as Alice
  • Kate Forbes as Evanora Harkness
  • Miles Guiterrez-Riley
  • Maria Dizzia
  • Okwui Okpokwasili

In addition to the witches who form Agatha’s potential new coven, a number of former Westview residents will be making appearances. Now freed from Scarlet Witch’s control, this will be the first time we’ve seen the fallout of Westview after WandaVision.

  • Debra Jo Rupp as Sharon Davis/”Ms. Hart”
  • Emma Caulfield Ford as Sarah Proctor/”Dottie Jones”
  • David Jayton as John Collins/”Herb”
  • David Lengel as Harold Proctor/”Phil Jones”
  • Asif Ali as Abilash Tandon/”Norm”
  • Amos Flick as “Dennis”

In April 2023, Patti LuPone spilled some major details as she revealed she’ll be making her MCU debut as the witch Lilia Calderu. While appearing on an episode of The View, the Broadway icon opened up about her role while also revealing all about her co-stars.

“It’s a coven of witches, and I play Lilia Calderu, who apparently is in the Marvel world. I researched her, she’s hot, she’s really hot, she’s got a great body and hair,” she explained. “I didn’t know there were witches, I didn’t know anything about the Marvel world. There are witches in the Marvel world. So, we are a coven of witches and the witches are: Kathryn Hahn, Aubrey Plaza, and [a] Familiar – if anybody knows Heartstopper – is Joe Locke.”

It was previously announced that Joe Locke, of Heartstopper fame, had been cast, with rumors circulating that he may be an alternate version of Wanda’s son Billy Maximoff, aka Wiccan.

The same goes for Aubrey Plaza, whose entry into the MCU was reported by Variety in November last year. Plaza, however, will be playing an original character named Rio Vidal. Rumors state that Vidal will be a “green witch” and former partner of Agatha.

The role is Plaza’s first time featuring in a big comic book project. The actor – best known for playing April Ludgate in Parks and Recreation – has a reputation for her deadpan comedic delivery. Her casting also reunites her Hahn, with the two having both worked in Parks and Recreation.

Saturday Night Live star Sasheer Zamata has also joined the cast as Sorceress Jennifer Kale.

In addition to these new additions, Deadline confirmed that Debra Jo Rupp, who played Mrs. Hart in WandaVision, would also appear in Agatha All Along.

Are there plot details for Agatha All Along?

Agatha All Along follows Agatha Harkness as she tries to form a coven and regain her power after breaking free of the Scarlet Witch’s illusion.

Under its earlier title, Agatha: House of Harkness, Marvel said the show will “reveal more about the character first introduced in Marvel Studios’ WandaVision.

“Jac Schaefer, who served as head writer and executive producer on WandaVision, returns for Agatha: House of Harkness. Be sure to hide all dogs named Sparky.”

In WandaVision, Agatha was revealed to be the source of Wanda’s anguish and the controller of her realities in Westview, drawn to her high level of power and wishing to take it for herself.

The last time we saw Agatha, she was condemned to live the rest of her life imprisoned in her own body as nosy neighbor Agnes, so it’s likely we’ll catch up with her efforts to break free.

However, according to a report from The Illuminerdi, Agatha All Along will pick up right after the events of WandaVision and take place in Westview. Agatha will be freed from the spell that Wanda placed on her by a new Coven of Witches, one of whom the reports claim to be Aubrey Plaza.

Will Scarlet Witch be in Agatha?

The Scarlet Witch herself doesn’t appear to be in Agatha All Along, but the first trailer hints her presence will be felt. The first trailer opens with a moody opening akin to a detective show. Here, Agatha, believing herself to be a detective, is investigating a murder.

The murder, it turns out, is Wanda’s. But Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal appears to try to convince Agatha that she can free herself from the illusion. It all points to this not being Wanda but a manifestation of Wanda’s death inside the illusion she created in WandaVision’s finale.

Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch actress Elizabeth Olsen herself previously touched on the potential of an appearance when speaking with Deadline. Asked if she could hint when and if she will return to the MCU, she responded, “I don’t know ever how to answer these questions except, I think I’ll be back.”

Is there a trailer for Agatha All Along?

The first teaser trailer for Agatha All Along was released on July 8. Check it out below:

The trailer showcases a decidedly darker tone than the title Agatha All Along would imply. In it, we learn Agatha has broken free of Wanda’s spell following her presumed death in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and is now on a quest to regain her powers.

Agatha All Along premieres on Disney+ on September 18. Until then, you can read up on every Deadpool 3 cameo we know about so far, the best new movies on streaming this month or all the upcoming Disney+ releases.
