Palworld Zoe & Grizzbolt guide: Strengths, weaknesses & how to win

Zoe, the owner of Grizzbolt in Palworld

Zoe and Grizzbolt are the first major boss encounters you’ll come across in Palworld, so here’s a guide on how to beat them, including a full rundown of their strengths and weaknesses.

Palworld has already become a massive hit, topping the Steam charts just a matter of hours after its release on January 19, 2024. With a lot of Pals to collect, a big open world to explore, and a unique blend of monster-taming and survival mechanics, it’s no wonder players all over the world are eager to dive into the game.

Similar to Pokemon, Pals in the game wield different elements that dictate their move types and which Pals they will be strong and weak against. Understanding how these elements interact with each other is vital to progressing to defeating bosses and the first boss you’ll fight is Zoe and her trusty Grizzbolt.

If you’re struggling with the encounter, however, here’s a rundown guide on how to defeat Zoe and Grizzbolt in Palworld.

Palworld Zoe and Grizzbolt tower encounter guide

Where to find Zoe & Grizzbolt

Zoe and Grizzbolt are the first major tower bosses encountered in the game, and they present a significant challenge to the unprepared. The pair occupy the Tower of the Rayne Syndicate, found to the Northwest of the starting location. Just follow the path all the way up and it’s pretty impossible to miss.

Character build & Grizzbolt mechanics

The fight is a tough one, and it’s important to bring the right team makeup to counter Grizzbolt’s strengths well. When we approached the fight for the purposes of this guide, our character was Level 12, with a full team of Level 11 Pals to back it up. Going into the tower earlier than this is not recommended.

When it comes to the player character, the three-shot bow, pelt armor and plenty of arrows are the best play here. Grizzbolt’s attacks are potent but relatively easily avoidable at range, meaning the bow is the ideal choice for laying down damage while avoiding incoming attacks.

The first major attack to watch out for is a sniped electric shot. Watch out for the laser guide and hide behind a pillar until the shot has been fired. It’s relatively slow to launch and should be easy enough to avoid.

Additionally, Grizzbolt casts a straight-line attack of electric explosions which rise up out of the floor. The best strategy for stopping those is to simply roll out of the way when it’s on the way. It isn’t able to change direction, and it’s not particularly quick either.

The last major attack mechanic is an up-close melee that sees Grizzbolt stamp on the floor, causing an electrical pulse to emerge in a circle around him. The best thing to do here is to stay out of the way and simply sprint off if Grizzbolt heads toward the player character. Make good use of the pillar again to hold up the boss, who is quite quick once he gets moving.

Ideal Pal choices & abilities to counter Zoe and Grizzbolt

Grizzbolt is an Electric-type and is therefore weak against Ground-type Pals and abilities in Palworld. As the encounter comes relatively early in the game, there are limited full Ground-type options available to the player. That said, there are plenty of Pals that can be caught with at least one Ground attack, despite it not being their main type.

That said, there are a couple of Ground-type pals to pick up before heading into the battle. The first is Rushoar, a boar with some nice baseline stats and attacks. Additionally, a Gumoss at the appropriate level is a particularly potent choice.

In the other squad slots, it’s worth bringing other types (aside from Water) that have Ground attacks. The big ones to look out for are Sand Blast and Stone Blast, and in our case, we took an Eikthyrdeer, whose powerful knockback attack is hugely useful for interrupting Grizzbolt and providing a distraction to open up damage windows.

Tanzee is another nice choice, particularly when equipped with the special machine gun and we went with Depresso in the last slot for the poison effect and ground attack combo.

With all that in mind, defeating Grizzbolt should be a relatively approachable proposition. As the first of five Towers, the challenge only increases from there, and you’ll need a new, more powerful squad as you go on.
