With Halloween just around the corner, Marvel has released its “horror” MCU trailer – but the Disney-owned studio is getting roasted for it.

You could argue that 2023 has been a full on horror show for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with a series of flops such as Secret Invasion and Ant-Man 3 destroying its winning streak.

However, the studio has had some hits this year. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 was everything fans were promised and more, while Loki Season 2 continues to impress audiences and critics alike.

Whatever the case, one thing’s for certain: the MCU is probably the last studio you’d think of when it comes to horror. Which is perhaps why it’s getting ridiculed for its new trailer.

Marvel roasted for its “horror” MCU Halloween trailer

To promote its various titles this Halloween, Marvel Studios dropped a promo video comprising various spooky MCU clips, including the big bads and creepy elements from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Werewolf By Night.

Other less obvious titles make an appearance too, such as Avengers: Endgame and Ant-Man. The studio shared the clip alongside the message: “This Halloween, visit the darkest corners of Marvel Universe. Stream these titles and more on @DisneyPlus.”

Although the clip works, some fans are ripping the MCU to shreds. “Horror in MCU….is that a joke,” wrote one on X/Twitter. “Should I be laughing?” Another quipped: “Everything about the current day MCU is horrific.”

“So nothing then,” joked a third, while a fourth added: “Don’t make me pull out the Spongebob on the kid roller coaster clip.” And a fifth chimed in: “Absolutely none of you have any idea what horror is.”

Not everyone agrees with this sentiment, however, with many fans seeing it as a bit of fun. “Whoever edited this trailer together, bravo,” said one. A second simply wrote: “This is an excellent promo.”

And then there are those who just want Marvel Studios to delve into more horror content, especially following the success of Werewolf By Night and the anticipation for the Blade reboot – could this be building to a Midnight Sons movie? Time will tell.
