Thor 5: Everything we know

Chris Hemsworth as Thor

Here’s everything we know about Thor 5, as the God of Thunder gears up for another journey. When will it happen? Who will Thor fight next? And how will it affect the MCU at large?

Despite earning mixed reviews, Thor: Love and Thunder performed reasonably well at the box office. Sure, it may not be the best superhero movie ever made, but money talks, and Chris Hemsworth is still a big draw.

Our Love and Thunder review certainly lands on the positive side, so it’s safe to say we’d be keen for more. So, is Thor 5 part of the slate of upcoming Marvel movies?

Dive into what we know about the project, and find out everything Hemsworth has said about the idea.

Will there be a Thor 5?

Thor 5 is not officially on Marvel’s slate for the next few years, but it is thought to be in development behind the scenes.

According to insider DanielRPK, Thor 5 began development as of October 2023, but with a twist: The insider claims that Taika Waititi will not return to direct the movie. It’s unclear who Marvel is looking at to direct and whether Waititi would reprise his role as Korg in the fifth Thor movie.

In an interview with Inverse, Waititi confirmed that he isn’t currently working on Thor 5, since he “needed a break from that. It’s a very draining process working on these films for two and a half years and nonstop.”

Is there a Thor 5 release date?

Since Thor 5 is yet to be confirmed, there is currently no release date for the Marvel movie.

Right now, Thor 5 doesn’t appear on the MCU’s Phase 5 or 6 roster. Still, there are a number of projects scheduled for 2025 and 2026 that are currently untitled, so it could be among them.

The latest on the situation comes once again from DanielRPK, who suggests filming for Thor 5 will begin in Fall 2025. That’s a long way out, of course, but it makes sense, given the scooper claims Marvel is actively looking for a writer and director right now. The report pins Thor 5 as a post-Secret Wars release.

Who’d be in it?

If Thor 5 were to get the greenlight, we’d certainly be seeing Chris Hemsworth return as the New Asgardian.

We’d also expect to see Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Taika Waititi voicing Korg, both of whom are key allies to the titular cape-wearer in the film series. Although, with Waititi bowing out of the MCU as a creative, there’s a good chance Korg would disappear, too.

Given the Love and Thunder ending and post-credits scenes, it’s likely the Thor 5 cast would also include Jaimie Alexander’s Sif and Thor’s adoptive daughter Love, played by Hemsworth’s real-life daughter India Rose.

We would also expect to see Russell Crowe’s Zeus and Brett Goldstein’s Hercules return, as they have unfinished business with Thor.

There are two big question marks hanging over the cast: whether Nathalie Portman’s The Mighty Thor will be back, and whether Thor will be reunited with his brother Loki. The last we saw them, Jane Foster died, while Loki’s journey in his own show resulted in him becoming the Tree of Life. So, it’s quite possible neither will have a role to play in any potential Thor sequel.

There’s also the question of whether Hemsworth would even want to reprise his role for a fifth flick.

Back in June, he told Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character. If an audience wants to see it, and if there’s something that we believe is exciting and fun, then great. I’ve loved being able to reinvent that character a few times.

“I don’t have the answer yet, but I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable.”

Thor 5 potential plotlines

There are no official plot details right now, but we’d wager Zeus and Hercules will be the antagonists in Thor 5, based on the events of the Love and Thunder post-credits scene.

It is there that we see Zeus introduce his son, Hercules, as he tasks him with bringing down Thor. With this in mind, we could well see an epic battle between two of the strongest beings in Greek and Norse mythology facing off.

Still, there’s a good chance the pair could find common ground and team up against a greater threat. Perhaps a villain from another pantheon emerges as a threat, leading to a cosmic-scale clash of deities.

Being a fresh new entry to the MCU, we may also see more of Love, who is the last of her kind and might wrestle with her identity.

Adopted by Thor, she now wields Stormbreaker, a powerful weapon with a significant legacy. Her coming of age story could be at the center of Thor 5, exploring her place in the universe, her powers, and her relationship with Thor, who becomes her mentor and father figure.

That’s all we’ve got on Thor 5 for now, but why not learn all about other sequels like Spider-Man 4, Captain America 4, and Avengers 5. We’ve also got a list of the 10 best supervillains of all time, so you can pick out Thor’s next adversary for yourself. And, if you want more from Thor, here are all the Easter eggs and cameos in Love and Thunder.
