Minecraft is being transformed into a live-action movie – but fans of the game are split on a surprising update from Jack Black.

Hollywood has been trying to crack video game movies for decades. In 1993, Super Mario Bros became the first (and most disastrous) example of how not to do it, paving the way for a truly mixed bag of other films like Mortal Kombat (fine), Resident Evil (good), and House of the Dead (god awful).

However, after the success of HBO’s The Last of Us and Illumination’s big-screen take on Super Mario, the future is looking bright for new adaptations.

Minecraft, the blocky sandbox phenomenon, is still the best-selling game of all time to this day. A live-action film based on the title is in the works – but it might not be what players are expecting.

Jack Black says he’ll be singing in Minecraft movie

At the premiere of Kung Fu Panda 4, Black told Variety that he’d be singing in the upcoming Minecraft movie alongside co-star Danielle Brooks.

“I love Danielle Brooks. I’ve been a fan of hers ever since I first saw her on ‘Orange Is the New Black’ and she’s just been killing it in her career. And the fact that we’re working together on Minecraft is mind blowing. And we’ve been having a ball in New Zealand, and I’m so proud of her going to the Oscars…I always tell her, ‘You’re the class of the cast’ and she’s crushing it and can’t wait for you to see the movie.”

Some fans are pleased, given Black’s musical talents. “What if the Minecraft movie is actually peak cinema?” one user tweeted. “Oh man, I already know whatever he’s singing… it’s going to be a banger,” another wrote.

“This man’s mission is to turn every video game movie adaptation into a musical, and I’m here for it,” a third wrote, referencing Bowser’s ‘Peaches’ in the Mario movie.

Others aren’t so sure. “Have not heard a single piece of information about this film that would convince me that this will be good,” one wrote. “No way. It’s actually so over for this movie this is gonna be so ass,” a second tweeted.

“Minecraft will either be a complete disaster or a top 5 movie of all time,” a third predicted.
