With the hype for GTA 6 continuing to grow, fans are wondering when the next Grand Theft Auto game will be released.

Alongside the PS5 and Xbox 2

April and May saw a host of GTA 6 leaks materialize which varied from where the next game would be set to possible release dated and the platforms it will be available on.

While none of these leaks conclusively stated GTA 6 will release at the same time, the current feeling is that it will launch in November 2020 alongside the next generation of consoles. This means the PS5 and successor to the Xbox One is also expected to release then, although this is not confirmed.

Is GTA 6 the most anticipated game ever?

Others are speculating that a GTA 6 release date will go beyond 2020. As yet, not only have we not got a GTA 6 announcement, but there is little to suggest one is coming soon. It is unlikely Grand Theft Auto 6 will release without an extended period of release hype and marketing.

Looking at other Grand Theft Auto games

One way to try and figure out when GTA 6 will release is by looking at previous releases of Rockstar games.

The iconic Grand Theft Auto series started with GTA 1 in 1997. The birds-eye view concept of GTA proved successful and its successor, GTA 2, was released in 1999.

GTA 3 and its release on the PS2 in 2001 really saw the series catapult into gaming super-stardom. The 3D graphics and violence were at the time unprecedented. At this point there had been two years between each GTA release.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City bucked the trend with a release year of 2002. Also veering away from numbering the games came GTA: San Andreas which released in 2004. This would be the last game until 2008.

SonyOne leak claims GTA 6 will release alongside the PS5…

The seventh generation of consoles (PS3 and Xbox 360) clearly slowed down the production process of GTA. The quality remained however, and in the eyes of many resulted in even better games.

GTA IV released in 2008, and it wasn’t until 2013 that we got its successor GTA V. This would release at the end of the PS3 and Xbox 360 life span. Consequently, it would port to the PS4 and Xbox One and be a even bigger success there.

There is a clear pattern of the time between GTA releases growing longer. It has already been six years since the release of GTA 5, more than any other Grand Theft Auto game previous to this.

With no release date expected in the near future it looks like it will be a minimum of eight years this time around. What’s perhaps more depressing about the wait is when you look at the time between the trailer of each game being revealed and the subsequent release date.

The time between the GTA 4 trailer and release was just over a year and the time between the GTA 5 trailer and release was just over two years.

If this pattern continues then we would need a trailer in the next few months to secure that 2021 release date. Fortunately there are rumors, albeit slight ones, that there will be a surprise GTA 6 announcement at E3 2019. We can all hope…

GTA Online leaks hints at next-gen console engine, character transfers

GTA Online dataminers have found evidence the expanded and enhanced edition could include a new and improved next-gen console engine, as well as the ability to transfer characters between platforms.

It’s been a while since Rockstar Games announced they would release an expanded and enhanced GTA Online edition for next-gen consoles and PC in 2021. However, they remained tight-lipped on the details.

Data miners have been trying to find hidden gems in the lines of code ever since, and they’ve stumbled upon something interesting after the latest update. A pair of reputable leakers named ‘Tez2’ and ‘alloc8or’ shared the information on the GTA Forums. Here’s everything we know so far.

GTA Online’s popularity is set to skyrocket even more with the release of a next-gen version.

A next-gen engine based on Red Dead Redemption 2

Interestingly, they found a line of code in the game files that said “rage::fwuiMessageBase.” However, it’s more than simple programming jargon. Instead, it’s an apparent reference to a version of the RAGE Engine used in Red Dead Redemption 2.

It’s still speculation at this point, but it could mean the new version of GTA Online might be based on this engine. It’s superior to the previous engine in many ways, making the game look and feel smoother, and potentially increasing FPS rates on all platforms.

However, the leakers don’t want everyone to get their hopes up and think it’s important to have realistic expectations. They’re adamant it will be a significant upgrade, but aren’t expecting it to be a complete overhaul.

GTA Online already looks great, but it’s going to look even better in the next-gen console update.

GTA Online character transfers between platforms

According to the leaks, GTA Online players will be able to transfer their characters between other platforms and next-gen consoles. It’s based on a new line of code that includes “CHasCharacterToTransferDecisionPage.”

It’s not an official confirmation. However, it implies the game will include an interface that asks players to transfer existing characters. That way, nobody will lose track of their character progression when upgrading to the new edition on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X.

Keep in mind, though, that the code describes it as a “decision,” which could mean it’s a one-time transfer. Either way, it’s still a logical inclusion that many players hoped and expected would happen.

GTA Online is still one of the best-selling games on all platforms, and it’s easy to see why. Rockstar Games are continually adding new content to keep things fresh for it’s dedicated player base. But at the same time, it also entices new players to join the fun.

The next-gen console update will almost certainly make it even better. It will be interesting to see how it looks and performs. If these leaks are anything to go by, there’s a lot to look forward to.
