Is The Walking Dead over?

The Walking Dead has been on our screens for seemingly forever, and with its various spinoffs, things have gotten a little confusing in the walker-verse — so, is The Walking Dead over?

When The Walking Dead first aired in 2010, nobody could have guessed how long it would last, or just how big the series would grow. Yes, some might have already been aware of the comic books it was adapting, but the sheer number of spinoffs within TWD universe all these years later is staggering.

During its run, The Walking Dead has seen the entrance and exit of some major stars and legacy characters. It’s also spanned a timeline of just over 13 years. That’s a lot to keep track of, so it may be confusing to some if (and when) the flagship show ended.

Here’s all you need to know about whether The Walking Dead is over, and if so, what comes next for the franchise.

Is The Walking Dead Over?

Yes, The Walking Dead is over — it ended with its final episode on November 20, 2022 after 177 episodes, 11 seasons, and 12 years.

The show originally aired in October 2010, meaning the show’s run lasted over a decade. During the time it aired, six original spinoffs came to pass, making TWD a fully-fledged franchise.

After initially being rejected by HBO and NBC, the show became a huge hit after it was eventually picked up by AMC. While it became a small screen front-runner, the series dwindled to a small viewership, with same-day viewing numbers dipping to around 2 million.

The network announced in September 2020 that the show would end with Season 11, consisting of 24 episodes.

What’s next for The Walking Dead franchise?

There are two new Walking Dead spinoffs currently in development: More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe, and The Book of Carol.

Technically speaking, The Book of Carol is serving as Season 2 of the Daryl Dixon spinoff that aired in 2023. The latter was originally a co-starring vehicle for both Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride, but McBride dropped out due to scheduling reasons.

Meanwhile, More Tales from the Walking Dead Universe is another spinoff, developed by Scott Gimple. This would make it the eighth series within TWD Universe overall.

This will be a short-form six-part series, as announced back in April 2023. Most likely, this will serve as a spiritual Season 2 to Tales of the Walking Dead.

Here are all the shows and spinoffs in The Walking Dead so far:

  • The Walking Dead (2010-2022)
  • Fear the Walking Dead (2015-2023)
  • TWD: World Beyond (2020-2021)
  • Tales of the Walking Dead (2022)
  • Dead City (2023)
  • Daryl Dixon (2023)
  • The Ones Who Live (2024)
  • Daryl Dixon: The Book of Carol (in development)
  • More Tales from TWDU (in development)

The latest spinoff, The Ones Who Live, is currently airing. To find out more, check out our guide on how to watch The Ones Who Live, The Ones Who Live cast, and our guide to the CRM.
