A modder has developed a way of playing Nintendo Switch games in VR, creating a truly enormous 144” floating screen to play Mario Kart on.

Since the release of the Meta Quest 3, virtual reality (VR) fans have been developing new methods of work and play by using the features of the headset, such as the pass-through which enabled a mixed reality environment. This mixed reality mode lets users see the outside world with an overlay, enabling them to engage in other tasks whilst still watching a film on a floating virtual screen.

Now one Meta Quest 3 user has taken this concept to another level by developing a method of playing other consoles such as the Nintendo Switch inside mixed reality. This method enabled them to play Mario Kart on a floating virtual screen that is a massive 144 inches, far bigger than any commercial TV set.

Reddit user MissingNo700 posted in the r/OculusQuest subreddit about the project, detailing the equipment that they used, though some of the specifics of the method remain unclear. MissingNo700 used a combination of a HDMI to USB-C cable which was connected to a Capture Card. Then another HDMI cable was used to connect the docked Nintendo Switch. An Android app called USB camera was then side-loaded onto the Quest 3.

The modder stated how pleased they were that no emulation was involved, and it was a direct connection from the Switch dock to the headset. The size of the virtual screen was ‘measured’ using a cable to check the diagonal size of the screen, which was then checked against a measuring tape to confirm it was indeed a huge 144 inches.

MissingNo700 admits that it did take some considerable trial and error to make sure the setup was functioning correctly, but it was arguably worth it for the results.
