Destiny 2 The Final Shape pre-orders reportedly plummet after Lightfall missteps

Destiny 2’s The Final Shape pre-orders have reportedly plummeted to “less than 25%” of Lightfall’s total player count after the previous expansion left players disappointed.

Destiny 2 is in a bit of a weird spot at the moment. The massively popular looter shooter is supposed to be heading into its last expansion of the Light and Dark saga, but that was delayed until June of this year. Because of this Season of the Wish has been extended by a fair amount, with no new story content available for players to complete.

Therefore players are at a bit of a standstill, eagerly awaiting to see what Bungie does next. This is particularly so when players’ faith has declined a bit thanks to the lukewarm reception to Lightfall.

It seems that this has also translated to the pre-orders for The Final Shape, as pre-orders have reportedly dropped to lower than that of the past three expansions.

Destiny 2’s The Final Shape pre-orders may indicate a worrying trend

According to reporting from TheGamePost, total preorders thus far amount to “less than 25%” of the total Lightfall count, showing a significant decline in interest. At least, that’s the case this far out.

It’s not certain why this is the case, but there is potential that Lightfall’s lukewarm reception meant a lot of players lost faith in Bungie and the quality of their PvE content. With The Witch Queen being a fantastic expansion, many are hoping Bungie will continue the cycle of one good and one bad DLC, but we won’t know until the next expansion releases.

This does however indicate a potentially worrying sign for the developers, as The Final Shape is being hyped up as the end of a 10-year-long saga. Without this built-up hype, the number could’ve potentially been even lower.

No one is quite certain what the plans are for Destiny 2 past The Final Shape, but with the introduction of Marathon and even more layoffs at Bungie, this may very well be the start of the end for Destiny 2.
