Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection on Steam Deck is totally busted

If you were excited about Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection on Steam Deck, prepare for disappointment, as it currently does not run correctly on Valve’s handheld.

Konami is back, in its own strange way. The company announced a plethora of games last year, including multiple Silent Hill titles. But, there’s also announced was an upcoming remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Alongside that was the announcement that three classic Metal Gear Solid titles were being repackaged and released. Named Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, this compilation includes Metal Gear Solid through to Metal Gear Solid 3.

The collection also packages the original Metal Gear, its NES counterpart, and Metal Gear 2. However, it appears that there’s a major issue with it running on the Steam Deck.

Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 will not boot on Steam Deck

While the game appears to be running just fine everywhere else, there’s a clear issue with Proton’s translation layers and Linux for the title. The game will boot just fine, allowing you to play Metal Gear Solid 1 at its intended 30FPS. When you go to launch MGS2 or 3, the game crashes back to the launch screen.

It doesn’t even matter which version of Proton is being used, as it seems broken across the board. This is a massive shame, as Metal Gear on the go is an excellent way to play. Metal Gear Solid 3 on both Vita and 3DS offered vastly different experiences, but were both still very enjoyable.

Thankfully, Peace Walker isn’t included just yet, as the small mission-based game would be perfect for the Steam Deck.

Of course, as the game has just been released, there’s no news from either Konami or Valve on when this will get fixed. However, Valve is routinely fixing Proton, and we’d expect it to be included in the next batch of updates to the software.

While it might be broken for now, the game will get a fix relatively soon – we hope! You can grab the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection from Humble Bundle:
