Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players are convinced developer Game Freak trolled fans by debunking popular fan theories with the game’s actual story.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet’s overarching narrative is officially over, now that fans can freely activate the game’s epilogue scene following the Indigo Disk expansion.

However, before the game’s narrative had wrapped up, many players were running wild with speculation and creating theories on the wild twists and turns the story would take.

With the benefit of hindsight, some trainers were amused that developer Game Freak “trolled” some players after the story deviated heavily from some of the most popular fan theories.

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players look back at fan theories

A post on the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet subreddit sparked a discussion among the community after one fan made a thread titled, “There’s something funny about both of the biggest theories being wrong.”

The trainer included a meme that called out two popular fan theories created before the DLC’s release and alluded to the fact that Gen 9’s actual story deviated heavily from each of them.

The theories in question were the ‘Imagination theory’ and the ‘Kieran is Possessed’ theory, both of which were debunked following the DLC.

Of course, not every fan was happy to see the direction the actual story went and claimed the lackluster narrative spurred many fan theories.

“I mean Pokemon sucks at fleshing out stories and leave so many open ends,” said one fan. “…They also theory bait and straight up troll so I don’t blame people coming up with theories.”

Others guessed that Game Freak was aware of these theories thanks to in-game dialogue. “The funniest part was this exchange during The Indigo Disk: ‘Kieran: I’ve got a feeling you’re trying to play puppet master… But if I get a shot at battling {player}, then that’s fine with me. Drayton: Heh heh. That’s just peachy.’ They knew.”

Many other fans were glad the narrative veered from popular fan theories. “Super based, Imagination and Possession theory both sucked, this is much better.”

While there are still some loose threads and unanswered questions surrounding some of Scarlet & Violet’s plot threads, it seems like Game Freak has concluded the story the team wished to tell.
