Vecna – the big bad at the heart of Stranger Things Season 4 – was in talkative mood at the end of Volume 2, the monster revealing all about his past, present, and potential future. We’re going to dig into those words, so BEWARE OF STRANGER THINGS SPOILERS AHEAD…

When it comes to the Stranger Things Season 4 villain, it’s been a wild ride. Over the course of nine episodes, we’ve discovered his various names and identities, as well as his motivation.

He started out as a cute kid called Henry Creel. But through a combination of psychokinetic powers – and some serious personality disorders – that cute kid tortured and killed his entire family.

Creel then became 001, in the same shady government programme that gave us Eleven. And when the two of them went head-to-head, Eleven banished him to the Upside Down. In the process turning Henry/001 into the monstrous Vecna.

What has Vecna done in Season 4?

Vecna has been killing kids during Season 4.

Over the course of Season 4, Vecna has been killing the kids of Hawkins by getting into their minds, and using their darkest trauma and fears against them.

Turns out, he needs exactly four dead kids, like the four chimes of his signature clock, as they are his necessary sacrifices in order to open enough small gates in Hawkins, so that he can create that earth-shattering gate in the final episode.

The Season 4 climax puts Vecna and Eleven back in the Upside Down murder house, and Eleven tries to reason with him. “Papa is dead,” she reveals of Doctor Brenner. “I know what he did to you. You were different. Like me. And he hurt you. He made you into this. He’s the monster Henry, not you. Not you.”

Vecna disagrees however. “He did not make me into this,” the monster explains. “You did. At first I believed you had sent me to my death. To Purgatory. But I was wrong. I was somewhere new.

“I became an explorer. An explorer of a realm unspoiled by mankind. I saw so many things. And one day, I found the most extraordinary thing of all. Something that would change everything. I saw a means to realize my potential. To transcend my human form. To become the predator I was always born to be.”

What is Vecna’s Stranger Things plan?

Vecna has plans for world domination.

Essentially, Vecna hates humanity, and wants to take over their world. He had hoped that Eleven would help him achieve this goal. But when he realised she wouldn’t, Vecna instead used her. As he further explains…

“All I needed was someone to open the door, and you did that for me, without even realizing it. And when you did realize, you chose to resist. So I sought a means to open my own doors. I sought your power. So don’t you see? Once again, you have freed me. It is over Eleven. Your friends have lost. There is nothing – nothing – you can do to stop this now.

As for how he plans to achieve this global domination, Vecna continues: “Hawkins will burn and fall. And the rest of this senseless broken world. And I will be there. I will be there to pick up the pieces when it does. And remake it into something beautiful. There was a time when I had hoped to have you by my side. But now I just want you to watch.”

Season 4 ends with much of Hawkins destroyed, scores of people killed, and a gate opening up above the town in broad daylight. Meaning Vecna is now ready to put his plan into action during Season 5.

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 2 is available to stream on Netflix.
