6 new TV shows to watch in February

A live-action ‘anime’ years in the making, the return of the most-watched show in the US, and more: these are six TV shows you should be watching in February 2024.

January is traditionally a bit of a dumping ground in theaters; an all-bets-are-off month for movies that may not be able to compete against the bigger titles of the year to come.

It’s not the same for the small screen, with the new year bringing in some exceptional, must-see television. Masters of the Air, Apple TV’s huge-budget successor to Band of Brothers, is already a landmark series of the 2020s, while True Detective: Night Country has been met with steady acclaim and Netflix found another hit with Griselda, transforming an against-type Sofia Vergara into an infamous kingpin.

February isn’t easing up, either: whether you’re streaming on Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount Plus, Max, or watching cable, you better get comfy – here’s what you need to keep an eye out for.

New TV shows you need to watch in February 2024

Below, we’ve handpicked a few shows you should add to your watchlist over the coming month, as well as when and where you’ll be able to watch and stream them.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith

Release date: February 2

Where to watch: Prime Video

In 2005, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie redefined screen chemistry with Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a glitzy piece of action fluff with two stars at their humana humana apex. This reboot stars Donald Glover (also a co-creator) and Maya Erskine – but it puts a new twist on the bullet-crossed lovers.

Instead of a married couple who discover their uncannily similar career paths and try to take each other out, the new series follows two lonely spies as their agency forces them into an arranged marriage. It’s the perfect cover for espionage, whether they’re dealing with dead bodies in their bathtub or globe-trotting on super-secret missions – but what happens when they catch real feelings? It gets… complicated.

Halo Season 2

Release date: February 8

Where to watch: Paramount Plus

We know. The first season of Paramount Plus’ video game adaptation didn’t exactly meet its potential. The set pieces were underwhelming (an especially egregious takeaway, given the goosebumps conjured from the mere memories of playing the games), and the blunt positioning of the iconic, majestic rings felt like a major misstep.

Halo Season 2 should be a marked improvement, set to adapt the best story in the series: the fall of Reach. Lead star Pablo Schieber has appealed to fans to “come on back” after a strong, robust response to their feedback – as Master Chief once said, “I think we’re just getting started.”

Young Sheldon Season 7

Release date: February 15

Where to watch: CBS

The Big Bang Theory spinoff, following the early years of Ian Armitage’s Sheldon Cooper, has been an unprecedented success. Since coming to Netflix, it’s become the most-streamed show in the US by some margin – and as the series draws to its bittersweet close, fans have a lot of questions; mainly, will we see the death of George Snr?

With Sheldon and Mary in Germany, the Season 7 premiere is set to deal with the fallout of the Medford tornado – but there are key beats in the titular character’s life we’ve yet to see (including his move to Pasadena), so expect a lot to go down across the final 14 episodes.

Avatar: The Last Airbender

Release date: February 22

Where to watch: Netflix

Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the most acclaimed, beloved animated shows of all time – but fans have good reason to be cautious about Netflix’s series. Firstly, the original creators departed the project due to creative differences. Secondly, the path to live-action was paved with a disastrous 2010 movie by M. Night Shyamalan.

But, we’ll say this: it looks great, with early trailers promising spellbinding action and spectacle with Gordon Comier’s Ang, a young airbender capable of honing water, earth, fire, and air who’s burdened with the responsibility of bringing peace to the world and defeating the Fire Nation. If they pull it off, it could be one of the biggest shows of 2024.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live

Release date: February 25

Where to watch: AMC

The Walking Dead ended in spine-tingling fashion: a lone Rick Grimes stares up at a Civic Republic Military helicopter, resigned to his fate as he smiles, while Michonne gallops sword-first into a Dynasty Warriors-level horde of zombies in the distance. They’re miles, perhaps even years apart – but they’re alive.

Coming after Dead City and Darryl Dixon, The Ones Who Live is easily the most anticipated spinoff from AMC’s zombie-verse, set to be an “epic love story” chronicling the long, bloody path to Rick and Michonne’s no-doubt emotional reunion. Some may think TWD is dead – it’s time for a resurrection.

Shōgun

Release date: February 27

Where to watch: Hulu and Disney Plus

The red-band trailer for Shōgun, FX’s blood-soaked adaptation of James Clavell’s novel, is an onrush of “Holy sh*t!” imagery, whether it’s the jaw-dropping samurai violence or the show’s epic scale. Yet, it’s flown quietly under the radar, when it should be at the top of your watchlist for February.

Starring Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis, the series drops you into feudal Japan at the dawn of a century-defining civil war. An English sailor washes ashore after a shipwreck, but his secrets make him an unlikely ally – and with the political landscape more fraught than ever, he could help Lord Toranaga rebalance the hierarchy of power against the Council of Regents.
