Argylle post-credits scene explained

Argylle director Matthew Vaughn added a post-credits scene tying into one of his most popular movie franchises – leaving viewers stunned by its implications.

The spy comedy movie is a dynamic and colorful take on the genre that has fans thinking back to Austin Powers – per our review. But Argylle also taps into Vaughn’s exuberant use of theatrics, mixing reality and fantasy. A spy novelist learns everything she has written has come true and is now being hunted to write the next chapter.

Vaughn has been a hit among fans for his style of movies, including Kick-Ass, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, The King’s Man, and even Stardust. Argylle is the newest addition that fans may find has many similarities to his previous movies.

But Argylle’s post-credits scene will have fans’ minds whirling with the possibilities of what it means in connection to the spy movie and another Vaughn hit. Warning: major spoilers ahead!

Argylle post-credits scene is connected to Kingsmen

The post-credits scene takes place 20 years earlier when Argylle visits The King’s Man Pub and asks for a specialty cocktail that catches the owner’s interest.

In Argylle, not much is known about the actual book spy. All fans really know is that he’s good at what he does and is charming. Based on the movie, fans are led to realize the Argylle that Elly is describing is actually herself. So Argylle doesn’t necessarily exist in the real world. Right?

The post-credits scene opens 20 years into the past at a small-town pub called The King’s Man. Alarm bells go immediately off. A young handsome British man goes up to the bartender/owner asking for a vodka cranberry. The owner jokes that the pub isn’t the right place for something like that. Until the young man asks for specifications on how to make the cocktail. A look of realization falls upon the owner’s face.

He produces a box with a handgun and silencer inside. He tells the young lad that something terrible must have happened for him to come and see him. The owner asks what’s his name and the young lad answers, “Aubrey Argylle.”

Based on the scene, Argylle is a real-life spy and not just a figment of Elly’s imagination. Aubrey Argylle was or is a Kingsman agent. Could it be that because Elly is a spy, she knows about Argylle but doesn’t remember? Is Kingsman real? Or is it something from Elly’s books as well?

Vaughn’s post-credits scene implies the Kingsman universe exists within Argylle. The scene also ends with a look at the Argylle book cover poster reading, “Book One: The Movie.” With the scene taking place in the past and Elly having finished the series on Book Five, it means the first book is a backstory to Argylle himself. With Vaughn wanting a series of movies, he’s done the job of adding intrigue.
