With Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle movie out now, one of the biggest mysteries that unfolds asks the question: who is the real Argylle? Here’s what you need to know.

The crux of the storyline isn’t just that Elly Conway learns her spy storyline happened in real life, and she’s tasked with finding a Master File – it’s also all about Argylle. Matthew Vaughn’s movie has created an air of mystery about who the infamous book spy really is.

In the movie, you may be blown away by how accurately Elly is able to predict real-life events. It proves that she was right for a reason as she meets Aiden, a real-life spy. That’s not all, as the main characters and the secret organization that went rogue are all real. It leaves the question of whether the great and suave Argylle is real too.

Argylle takes fans on a whirlwind of plot twists and shock, with the biggest being the reveal of Argylle’s identity. Warning: Major spoilers ahead!

The real Argylle was someone no one saw coming

The biggest plot twist in the movie is learning that spy novelist Elly Conway is the real Argylle.

Confusing? Let’s break it down. When Elly is on her way to her mother’s house to work on a new chapter insisted by her, she meets Aiden. He reveals the truth that everything she has written is true and he’s a real-life spy. After the train fight, she learns the Master File is real and so is the Division, a government organization that went rogue. Having tapped into her network, Aiden has already read the draft of the last chapter of her book.

As the story goes, Aiden has her believe he was the one who was meant to meet with Bacunen, a master hacker who created the Master File, in London but he never showed. As they look for clues and use Elly’s brain to predict the next events, Elly learns a dire truth. She overhears Aiden saying he wants to kill her and she flees.

She calls her mother and they decide to go to London to rescue her. The mysterious father is revealed to be Ritter, the leader of the Division. As Aiden arrives to rescue her, it’s revealed that Elly’s parents aren’t real and are head members of the Division. Why?

It’s revealed when Aiden takes her to France to meet the real-life Alfi, better known as Alfred Solomon, the ex-Deputy Director of the CIA. He reveals to her the truth. Argylle is Elly Conway. But her real name is Rachel Kylle. See the wordplay?

Rachel Kylle was one of the Divisions’s elite agents and an unstoppable force. She and Aiden were partners and were trained by Alfi. Elly is the real Argylle while Aiden was her man in the chair, also known as Wyatt in her books. Aiden explains that he lost contact with her after London when she went to see Bacunen.

The story unfolds that Elly lost her memories as Rachel Kylle and was found by the Directory. They brainwashed her and made her believe she was Elly Conway. To get information about the Master File, they fabricated lies with reality in the form of a journal. Their goal was to control her while trying to access her memories.

The Argylle books came true because they were based on Elly’s real spy memories as Argylle. The scene fans see at the beginning of the movie is real but with Elly and Aiden. They learn the Directorate was dirty and went against them. It explains why Elly kept seeing Argylle – it wasn’t a coping mechanism but a hint of her true self.
