Henry Cavill stars in Argylle as the handsome and perfect spy Elly Conway has created in her spy novels – but the movie has a surprise twist by the end.

The trailers and movie emphasize everyone’s love for Argylle. He’s a top-notch covert spy who is everyone’s dream – despite the haircut. He often wears a well-structured velvet coat and never looks disheveled. Not to mention his charming smile and smooth moves in fighting sequences.

By all accounts, Argylle might give James Bond a run for his money. But the movie wraps around whether the suave Argylle is a real person as Elly’s books seem to come to life.

Cavill depicts the character Elly imagines seamlessly, but by the end of the movie, fans are in for a shock. Argylle adds a sudden twist to Cavill’s role. Warning: spoilers ahead.

Henry Cavill plays two different characters in Argylle

By the end of Argylle, Elly is answering fan questions for the new and final book of her series and takes a question from a fan who looks exactly like Argylle… but a messier version.

After the espionage adventure and Elly learning the whole truth about being a spy, she’s still Elly in a lot of ways. Having found her love for writing, she finished the last chapter of the book and ended the Argylle series. Like at the start of the movie, she’s at a fan meeting taking questions.

While exploring where the characters left off and what’s next for them, she left speechless. She takes on final question from a fan. To her utter surprise, the fan is Argylle. Well, the version of Argylle she has always imagined in her head. Henry Cavill reappears in Argylle in Elly’s real life as a fan of her books.

But unlike the book spy, this fan is disheveled, and still buff, but has a greasy mullet and seems geeky in many ways. He teases Elly on whether she still has time for one question from a fan like him. Elly gasps in utter shock realizing what’s happening.

Argylle has left fans wondering if Henry Cavill’s other character is meant to mean something. Was it just a fun joke to play on Elly as everything else from her books became real? Was it to burst her bubble that her imaginative hunky spy is anything but in real life? But there is something peculiar about the fan – maybe something to come back to in a sequel?
