Sega’s next game starring the world’s favorite hyperspeeding hedgehog is Sonic X Shadow Generations. We’ve combed over its recent reveal to gather everything you need to know about the game.

Sonic is one of Sega’s biggest franchises and the larger-than-life hedgehog is a transmedial icon. Since he debuted on Sega Genesis in 1991, Sonic has had his own television shows, films, and even Lego sets.

Throughout the years, Sega never forgot Sonic’s roots though and we’ve seen more than 30 games featuring their mascot since he first spin-dashed onto consoles. Now the next Sonic game is here.

Sonic X Shadow Generations is a remake of the beloved 2011 Sonic Generations featuring brand-new content that stars Sonic’s edgy frenemy Shadow the Hedgehog. We’ve got all the details you need to know about the game including its release window, reveal trailer, and more.

Sonic X Shadow Generations Release Window

Sonic X Shadow Generations will release sometime in Fall 2024 according to a recent reveal. This is good news for fans hoping to strap on the sneakers of the world’s fastest hedgehog and the ultimate life form.

While we don’t have an exact release date for the game yet, we’ll be sure to update you with it when it’s announced.

The Sonic X Shadow Generations reveal trailer was first shown during the February 1, 2024, State of Play. In the trailer, we see the two incarnations of Sonic that featured in the original Sonic Generations game from 2011 before Shadow the Hedgehog enters dramatically.

As previously mentioned, Sonic X Shadow Generations is a remake of the 2011 title Sonic Generations. As such, the game will feature a mix of classic 2D and 3D levels from Sonic’s back catalog that will be traversed by the modern Sonic we know and love and the shorter, chunkier Sonic of the early 90s.

What makes this remake so different from the original titles is very obviously the addition of Shadow the Hedgehog. Putting Sonic’s black and red rival front and center makes sense given that Shadow will play a big role in the upcoming film Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

The trailer has shown off gameplay of the segments featuring Shadow. They look to feature new takes on some of Shadow’s levels from Sonic Adventure 2 and the divisive PS2 classic Shadow the Hedgehog.

While it doesn’t look like the fandom-splitting guns from Shadow the Hedgehog will be returning in this game, the antagonist Black Doom looks set to return. Black Doom plays a key role in Shadow the Hedgehog’s backstory and his minions are seen in the trailer for Sonic X Shadow Generations.
