Pokemon Go players celebrate father’s memorial turned into PokeStop

In Pokemon Go, most PokeStops are assigned to famous locations or places where people will naturally gather, like stores or local landmarks. This means you’ll always have a chance to spin their disc for healing items & Poke Balls while you’re out playing the game.
It’s also possible for players to nominate locations to be turned into PokeStops, which has its own process that can take weeks to complete, with Niantic able to refuse the request if it doesn’t meet their guidelines. This is how a certain horrifying Pikachu ride in Australia became a PokeStop.
The process for nominating a PokeStop has its issues, with some fans complaining that the results don’t make sense, but there have been instances where people are pleased with the results, as heartwarming locations were chosen.
Pokemon Go fan’s father’s memorial is a PokeStop
A user on the Pokemon Go Reddit has shared pictures of their father’s memorial chair in Ireland’s Glencolmcille island, which is now a PokeStop. Fans quickly showed their adoration for the PokeStop, seeing it as a touching tribute.
“Sorry for your loss. At least he will stay in Pokémon GO with us for the rest of time and for you a important memory of him,” one user wrote, while another said, “That’s so cool. Pin the hell outta that stop and may he forever rest in peace.”
“I don’t know anybody involved in this post and I’m tearing up wtf this is so wholesome,” one user commented, while another wrote, “Cool memorial. It looks like where you go to save your progress in a video game and it glows magically when you touch it.”
When asked about the throne, the OP of the thread explained, “Memento Mori indeed. He didn’t make it, but just before he got sick in 2014 they were preparing for a nationwide festival celebrating all the masonry and stone in Ireland and my dad taught a lot of the younger local men how to be masons and how to work the stone.”
“Sadly he died before the festival but the men who he taught honoured him with this incredible throne, which has his name carved on the arms. Between the physical monument to his memory and finding out it’s in Pokémon Go, I’m reminded of what a lucky man I am to have called him dad. A real class act.”
It’s unclear who nominated the spot for a PokeStop, but whoever did created an amazing tribute to an already incredible monument. The Pokemon Go community might be vitriolic sometimes, but they do band together when it comes to celebrating the lives of those who have passed.
