MTG has been teasing a Winter superdrop for its Secret Lair series, with six individual Secret Lair products set for release on February 5, 9 am PT, and running until March 3rd 11:59 pm PT.

Each of these Secret Lairs is a potentially valuable collector’s item, featuring alt-art versions of rare and often powerful cards from throughout MTG’s history.

Unfortunately, MTG’s Secret Lair series is in the process of upheaval, and these cards will soon be much more difficult to get ahold of. We’ll give you the rundown on why that is, and help you get ahold of these cards while supplies last.

Why is MTG Secret Lair selling out?

From MTG Secret Lair’s initial release in 2023 through to 2023, a print-to-demand model was used. Pre-orders would be placed for the product, and an equal amount would be printed and shipped. This meant that, while MTG players buying Secret Lairs would often have to wait quite a while for them to arrive, at least there was a fair chance for everyone interested to place an order.

Now, Wizards of the Coast has decided to switch to a limited-run print model instead. Ostensibly intended to cut down on wait times, the fallout from this change has been that highly-anticipated Secret Lairs like Commander Deck: Raining Cats and Dogs sold out within hours of becoming available.

Many fans were unaware that Commander Deck: Raining Cats and Dogs purchases were even live before they sold out. As a result, negative sentiment around the limited-run model is continuing to grow.

Additionally, the release for this Winter Superdrop is held back until April 12th, meaning that players will still have to wait a considerable length of time between ordering and receiving their secret lairs, making the ‘reduced wait times’ seem moot.

It’s unfortunate for players to have to contend with this change to Secret Lairs. Dealing with scalpers and marked-up prices shouldn’t ever be a necessity. As such we’ll show you what each of the Winter Superdrop Secret Lairs contain as well as their release time, so that you have as much information as possible before making a purchase.
