Taika Waititi has been on the roster to direct a Star Wars movie for a while, but why is this taking so long to happen?

Taika Waititi has been dipping his toes in franchises as of late. Of course, we have both of his Thor movies, which received very different levels of praise, but now – after already directing The Mandalorian Season 1 finale – the auteur is taking on Star Wars.

Or at least, he seemed to be. However it’s been a long time since his announcement of making a movie in a Galaxy far far away, and any signs of progress seem small.

So why is this? Well, Waititi has finally gone on record to explain why he’s still in the early stage of development.

Waititi claims he wants to “capture that joy” in Star Wars

When making an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, Waititi addressed the amount of time it has taken to make his Star Wars movie. The main issue seems to be that he wishes to do the story justice, and wants to “capture that joy” of the original trilogy:

“I’ve been developing [the Star Wars film] for a few years, but I think with any film, but that one in particular, it’s something I’d really like to get right so I don’t want to rush it. It’s going to bubble along on the side. I wanna capture that joy and entertainment of those early ones like The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi and all those ones, so I’m trying to figure that out. It’ll happen.”

Waititi has also expressed that his film will be expanding the Galaxy Far, Far Away in a new way. This was accompanied by a new piece of promotional art shown at Disney’s 2020 Investor’s Call, which depicted a diamond-shaped object floating in space.

There’s been a large amount of speculation about what Waititi’s movie could entail, but many assume it will be a comedic stint, like his Marvel movies are. But little official information has actually been released.

This film will be coming with a wave of new projects as David Filoni takes on the reigns of the Star Wars franchise as a whole.

Most Star Wars projects are currently available to stream on Disney+. For more Star Wars news, check out our coverage by clicking here.
