5 new K-dramas to watch in May

March promises a new month of must-watch K-dramas from a Parasite actor making his small-screen debut to a storyline Squid Game fans will love.

We have already gotten our fair share of hits in 2024, from Marry My Husband to the end of Netflix’s Queen of Tears. But now we are gearing up for May to bring some of the most anticipated dramas that have been in the works for months.

April was a superb month for fans like the manga-adapted Parasyte: The Grey which had die-hard fans invested. Not to mention the time travel romance Lovely Runner. It’s time for May to show us what it’s got.

There are more than a few K-dramas to keep tabs on from Netflix and other popular streaming platforms.

The Atypical Family

Release Date: May 4, 2024

Netflix is gearing up for a superhero romance that’s not the run-of-the-mill storyline. The Atypical Family follows a unique family who have superpowers – that one day disappear. Bok Gwi-joo (Jang Ki-yong) has the ability to travel back in time, but can only visit his happy memories.

Things change when an accident leads him to have depression and lose his powers. He’s not the only one as his family also loses their powers. It’s due to real-life problems like insomnia, bulimia, and phone addiction. The arrival of Do Da-hae (Chun Woo-hee) and her time with the family changes everything.

The Midtown Romance in Hagwon

Release Date: May 11, 2024

A cute romance you don’t want to miss. The Midtown Romance in Hagwon follows Seo Hye-jin (Jung Ryeo-won). She’s worked as a private language teacher in the Daechi neighborhood of Gangnam for 14 years. The neighborhood is known as one of the best. But Hye-jin has been thinking of what comes next after her career and her forgotten dream.

She meets her old student Lee Joon-ho (Wi Ha-joon) after 10 years. With her help, he went on to a prestigious university and a good job. But he quits it all and begins working for the same school as Hye-jin. Sparks begin to fly.

Crash

Release Date: May 13, 2024

Cha Yeon-ho (Lee Min-ki) is skilled in mathematics from one of the top universities in Korea with multiple certifications. He’s transferred to the TCI (Traffic Crime Investigation) team with a special ability to calculate the exact time of an accident.

But he lacks social skills and can’t drive a car, leading it to hinders his police work. He and his team work together to stop traffic violations and crimes. But some are more sophisticated than others and more complex leading the team to use their special skills to get the job done.

The 8 Show

Release Date: May 17, 2024

The 8 Show is one of Netflix’s 2024 K-dramas that will entice Squid Game fans. Based on the webtoon Money Game and Pie Game by Bae Jin-soo, eight participants do whatever is necessary to win a cash prize.

The contestants are all in financial hardships and decide to take part in a reality series called Money Game. It has a 44.8 billion won prize up for grabs. The rules? The contestants have to stay in a concrete studio for 100 days. To obtain everyday necessities, they have to pay for them and the prices have been inflated to the extreme. If they purchase the item, it’s removed from the overall winnings.

Connection

Release Date: May 24, 2024

What happens when a devoted and strict cop becomes addicted to drugs? Connection is a May K-drama following Jang Jae-kyeong (Ji Sung). He’s a police detective at Anhyeon Police Station who believes success comes from removing personal connections. He keeps his family, friends, and other officers far away.

But everything changes when he’s forced to become addicted to drugs by someone. Using his friend’s death as a clue, he begins to uncover 20 years’ worth of corruption. He soon meets local reporter Oh Yoon-jin (Jeon Mi-do). After getting unjustly fired and not finding work, she begins to investigate the corruption in Anhyeon.
