Madame Web gets rinsed over opening box office projection

Madame Web’s opening box office projection has arrived, and it’s getting roasted by the online community – with comparisons to another Marvel-based movie flop.

To clear up any confusion, Madame Web is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) – meaning it’s Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) canon.

The movie stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a New York paramedic who gains psychic abilities and uses her powers to protect three young women with powerful futures.

Ahead of its release, Madame Web has become the subject of ridicule online thanks to its meme-worthy trailer, and now it’s getting roasted for its prospective box office opening.

Deadline reports that the Spider-Man spinoff is tracking to open with $25 million over the first six days at the box office – and it’s led to Madame Web getting rinsed online (again).

Taking to the comments section of a tweet about this figure, one wrote, “Half it,” while another quipped, “One of the movies of all time,” suggesting it will be unremarkable.

“For a 6-day opening, that’s atrocious,” added a third, to which a fourth replied, “Damn these superhero movies are tanking.” And a fifth chimed in, “Most people don’t even know Madame Web is supposed to be a superhero, that’s how bad it’s been marketed.”

One commenter dolled out some advice, writing: “This movie will probably bomb. But I think it will probably do really well on home video.

“However, if SONY was smart, they would release whatever Spider-Man connection there is in the movie… just to get SOME hype for it. Hell, MORBIUS made $39mil in its opening weekend.”

Speaking of Morbius, Sony’s most recent attempt at building a Spider-Man cinematic universe without the Webslinger present – starring Jared Leto as Michael Morbius – quickly became a meme and the subject of ridicule due to its dodgy VFX and generic storytelling.

Madame Web is expected to suffer the same fate, with one X user suggesting it will be “Morbius 2,” and another describing it as “Morbius meets The Marvels.”

One positive is that the relentless Morbius memes drew interest across the globe, meaning Madame Web may experience the same – whether this translates into ticket sales is yet to be seen.

If you want to see for yourself, Madame Web drops in theaters on February 14, 2024 – you can find out more about the film here
