The wizarding world returns, this time on the small screen, as HBO Max has shared a release date for the Harry Potter TV series – but fans are divided.

It’s been over 10 years since the last Harry Potter movie hit theaters, but the world created by J.K. Rowling still grows in popularity. In April 2023, Warner Bros announced the story of the boy who lived would be getting a TV series adaptation.

The series will dive into each of the seven novels in detail and is set to run for 10 consecutive years. When it comes to its creative team, a set group has been considered like Martha Hillier, Kathleen Jordan, Tom Moran, and Michael Lesslie, as well as Succession’s Francesca Gardiner.

The Harry Potter TV series has also yet to release its leading cast, especially the actor taking over the infamous role of the great young wizard. But recent news has fans divided as HBO Max announced a release window.

When will the Harry Potter TV series be released?

According to IGN, a financial call with CEO David Zaslav announced the Harry Potter TV series will release in 2026.

“We’ve not been shy about our excitement around Harry Potter,” said Zaslav. “The last film was made more than a dozen years ago. I was in London a few weeks ago with Casey and Channing and we spent some real time with JK and her team. Both sides just thrilled to be reigniting this franchise. Our conversations were great, and we couldn’t be more excited about what’s ahead.”

News of the new release window has some fans excited to see what HBO Max will come up with, while others can’t help but crack a few jokes about it.

One fan commented on X/Twitter that there’s potential for the series to work, but only if done right. “I think the show will only be successful if they approach it like the movies. Meaning a decent budgets for visual effects and a story that is compelling. Otherwise why waste the time and money to make a marginal product. Just my opinion,” said the fan.

Others were slightly worried that because it’s a new series of the infamous franchise, it may become too modernized to fit current times. After all, Harry Potter gained fame at the start of the 2000s. Others are wondering whether it will be released at all.

“He’s excited to cancel it and write it off for taxes you mean,” said one fan.

Another agreed, saying, “60/40 chance it gets filed as a tax write off.”

“Nah this blows,” chimed in another.

In 2023, Daniel Radcliffe reported to Deadline he was likely not to return for the series. “Certainly, everything I’ve read about the series they’re starting fresh, so it’d be a bit weird to have me pop in… I think that Harry Potter was always destined to become like Sherlock Holmes…,” he said. The actor believes it’s the chance for another kid’s life to change.
