Lionsgate has revealed they are working on a new animated Twilight series and fans are confused by the news.

During the 2010s, the YA genre took over cinema. Between Twilight, The Hunger Games, Divergent, and more, the coming of age story meets dystopia action and drama was more popular than ever before.

Despite hitting a slump in recent years, the YA genre appears to be making a resurgence, The Hunger Games: A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes releasing in 2023 and performing well at the box office.

However, the newest YA resurgence has many fans scratching their heads in confusion, with Lionsgate confirming that an animated Twilight series is currently beginning development.

Deadline was the first to report the news, with Lionsgate Vice Chairman Michael Burns sharing the information about the new project during a Q&A at the Morgan Stanley media conference.

“We’re going to go out with the Twilight series, an animated series, I think there’ll be a lot of interest in that.”

The original Twilight book series and subsequent live-action films were a massive hit for the studio and author Stephanie Meyer. Across the four films made, the Twilight franchise grossed more than $3.4B globally and in some ways helped launch the careers of its two main stars in Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart.

Both of which have gone on to star in major franchises like Batman, Charlie’s Angels, and more.

Despite Burns’ belief that this new animated Twilight show will garner “a lot of interest”, the early online response from fans indicates otherwise. Across social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) Twilight fans have been sharing their confusion and disinterest at the news.

One Twilight fan wrote, “Did we ask for this? I don’t remember being asked.” Another added, “Who is even the target audience for this?”

A third X user also wrote, “It’ll be as bad as the movies they’ve been making.”

At the time of writing, it is unclear if the animated film will serve as a retelling of the book series or if it will include a completely original story. What’s more, the cast and crew for the new animated Twilight project are still yet to be confirmed.
