OnePlus has just announced its latest flagship smartphone, the OnePlus 12. The company has finally gotten its product lineup straight and the OnePlus 12 is one of the most balanced smartphones we’ve seen from the brand.

This time OnePlus has also announced a more affordable OnePlus 12R, which is a solid Pixel 7a and Galaxy A54 competitor.

Both phones bring an insanely bright display that can go up to 4500 nits. The OnePlus 12 gets the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 under the hood while the OnePlus 12R makes do with the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip.

OnePlus says the OnePlus 12 will start shipping on February 6 while the OnePlus 12R’s open sales will begin on February 13. However, you can already pre-order both phones from the OnePlus store.

If you pre-order the OnePlus 12, you can receive a free 50W wireless charger. Additionally, a free storage upgrade is available for those who purchase the phone between January 23 and February 18.

OnePlus is also offering a $100 discount on the trade-in of any phone, regardless of its condition. This trade-in discount is applicable to OnePlus 12R pre-orders as well.

The OnePlus 12 starts at $799, which is a $100 price increase over the older model, but there’s a reason behind it. The base model of the OnePlus 11 shipped with 128GB of RAM, whereas the OnePlus 12 now comes with 256GB of storage. You can get the new phone with a starting price of $799. Opting for the 512GB storage variant will cost you $899.

By comparison, the OnePlus 12R comes with a relatively competitive price tag of $499. The phone is priced at $499 for the base 128GB storage model and $599 for the 256GB storage option. This smartphone is bound to offer competition for the Galaxy S23 FE and Pixel 7a, which are priced at $599 and $499, respectively.

OnePlus 12 is offered in Silky Black and Flowy Emerald colors while the OnePlus 12R comes in Iron Gray and Cool Blue.

Specifications and features

OnePlus 12 and OnePlus 12R come packed with impressive specifications for the price. Both devices get an LTPO AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and retina-burning 4,500 nits peak brightness. OnePlus 12’s panel measures 6.82 inches while the OnePlus 12R is slightly smaller at 6.78 inches.

The affordable OnePlus 12R is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which is a generation older chipset. It was seen on the OnePlus 11 and the Galaxy S23 Ultra. OnePlus 12, on the other hand, packs the latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, which also powers the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

We tested the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3’s performance on the iQOO 12 and were impressed with its smooth gaming performance. It gives tough competition to Apple’s iPhone 15 Pro Max, which features the A17 Pro SoC.

The camera system is where you start seeing the main differences between the two phones. OnePlus 12 gets a triple camera setup on the rear, headlined by a 50MP main sensor. OnePlus has also packed a new 64MP periscope telephoto lens on the phone with 3X optical zoom. The ultrawide camera uses the same 48MP sensor.

OnePlus 12R, by comparison, features a 50MP main camera, 8MP ultrawide, and a 2MP macro camera.

Elsewhere, OnePlus 12 packs a large 5,400 mAh battery while the OnePlus 12R gets an even larger 5,500 unit. Both phones support 80W wired charging. OnePlus 12 also supports wireless charging up to 50W. They run Android 14 on the software front.
