Pokemon Go players slam “narrow” PvP meta

Pokemon Go players are complaining about how limited the scope for teambuilding is in fights, especially when rewards are locked behind participation in the Battle mode.

The fights in Pokemon Go are nowhere near as complicated as the mainline games. There’s more screen tapping and less planning, breeding, and strategizing, especially with battles happening in real-time.

This isn’t to say that the competitive scene in Pokemon Go is completely without complexity. You still need a decent mix of types and Pokemon with a good mix of types and moves. Knowing when to use your Protect Shields and Charged Attacks is also paramount.

Unfortunately, not everyone is happy with the battles in Pokemon Go. Like many competitive video games, some choices are better than others, and in the case of Pokemon Go and its hundreds of ‘Mons, that number is distressingly small.

Pokemon Go players are unhappy with “narrow” PvP meta

A user on the Pokemon Go Reddit created a thread where they talked about their dislike for the PvP in the game, especially as it’s tied to Timed Research rewards and hitting the higher levels. Other users shared this sentiment, sharing their grievances with the combat mode.

“PvP is so terrible,” one user wrote, “The meta is so narrow that there’s pretty much a guarantee you won’t be able to succeed with your favorite Pokemon. You have you use the same pool of 30 ‘mon everyone else is using and it feels terrible.”

“PvP in PoGo is objectively bad and far too luck based, another user said, “The starting pokemon on both sides determines the outcome of the match 50% of the time. I tank because all I care about are the rewards.”

“Yeah PVP is pretty trash. Not sure why they adopted and kept such a cruddy system. Good news is you can basically just ignore it without any major detriment!,” one user commented, while another said, “I’m the same as you. I haven’t leveled up from 43 because of the mandatory PVP tasks even though I have enough XP to hit 50.”

The narrowness of the meta isn’t just an issue with Pokemon Go. The mainline Pokemon series has had tier lists for as long as the series has been around, with a handful of Pokemon outclassing the rest in battle.

If you’re just interested in the single-player mode, then you never need to engage with the competitive scene, but Pokemon Go roadblocks content behind fights, much to the dismay of players who don’t like the battle system.
