Overwatch 2 devs want more “Mercy-style” support heroes with less aim focus

The Overwatch 2 developers have opened up about the types of heroes they want in the long-awaited sequel and have teased releasing more supports similar to that of Mercy.

Overwatch’s wild cast of heroes have an incredibly varied set of skills to match a variety of playstyles. While sharpshooters with pinpoint accuracy may find themselves on Widowmaker, sneaky playmakers can look for big environmental kills with Lucio.

With so much to choose from, it’s surprising that there are only a handful of characters that don’t require precision aiming to make an impact, with Mercy being one of the top examples.

As it turns out, Mercy-style heroes are exactly what the Overwatch 2 devs have talked about adding down the line, especially with more characters planned post-launch.

Overwatch 2 will add more supports like Mercy

In a recent interview, Lead Hero Designer Geoff Goodman talked about new heroes that may not be as aim-intensive as Ana or Baptiste and the team’s design philosophy.

“We want to make sure there are more ways to express your skill than just aiming. Mercy was a really early example,” he said, explaining how he personally disagrees with those who think she is a low-skill hero. “There is so much skill that goes into positioning yourself well and deciding when to Rez.”

According to Goodman, these kinds of heroes are something the team wants to continue adding and plan to do so.

There might be less aim-focused supports in the future.

“Lately, especially on the support side, we’ve been talking about adding more Mercy-style of less aim-focused. Some of our more popular supports like Zenyatta and Ana are very aim-focused, but we started thinking maybe we need more of the pure Mercy-style,” he continued.

Goodman further stated these heroes would be more focused on their own team, but would be capable of making big plays “outside of aiming. That’s definitely something we talk about a lot and we’re looking at doing it more in the future,” the hero designer said.

Overwatch has a couple more supports currently in the works, including a teased fox-like hero. We’ll have to see if they end up being more like Mercy when they’re finally revealed in OW2’s upcoming seasons.
