MTG fans react to eldritch Eldrazi return in Modern Horizons 3

The Eldrazi are a highlight of MTG for many players, and these feared reality-warping titans are returning in Modern Horizons 3.

MTG’s Gatewatch era was a mixed back for many players, with common complaints stemming from a seeming eagerness by Wizards to jump on the superhero storytelling bandwagon. While the Gatewatch – a team of tentatively allied Planeswalkers – no longer has much prominence in MTG, the threat they originally formed to stop remains a fan-favorite faction.

The Eldrazi are colossal, unknowable beings that draw on Lovecraftian designs and storytelling and have always made a big impression whenever a new Eldrazi card emerges for MTG. Now, in a look ahead to June 2024’s Modern Horizons 3 set, it appears the Eldrazi are rising in force once more, ready to warp the worlds of Magic.

Emrakul leads MTG’s Eldrazi revival

MTG Emrakul the World Anew Eldrazi card

Emrakul, the World Anew is the latest card representing the feared Eldrazi titan of Corruption. With fellow titans Ulamog and Kozilek fallen, Emrakul alone remains inside Innistrad’s moon. MTG fans have been waiting for a true follow-up to this event for some time now. While Emrakul is still haunting Innistrad for the time being, this new card will go some way toward soothing fans’ anticipation and pain.

We expect the Eldrazi – with Emrakul chief among them – to be one of the biggest draws of Modern Horizons 3. Clearly, Wizards of the Coast is expecting the same, with promotional material for the set featuring the Eldrazi heavily. Additionally, borderless Eldrazi-themed lands will be included in the set.

It is important to note that, while the Eldrazi return is a big deal for MTG players, it has significantly less impact on the game’s overarching story. Modern Horizons sets are not beholden to taking place chronologically, and the cards featured in them – including the Eldrazi – can be taken from any point on the timeline. Magic’s current story is currently focused on the Omenpaths and interplanar travel without Planeswalker sparks. While fans may be champing at the bit for the Eldrazi’s story return, now simply isn’t the right time for the to be done justice.

The Eldrazi cards in Modern Horizons 3 will likely be taking place in Magic’s past. Even so, there is clearly a hunger among both the player base and the design team to feature Eldrazi more and more, so perhaps they may make a return to MTG’s current story sooner rather than later. Much of the future following the Omenpath arc remains unknown, after all.

However, some MTG fans over on Reddit like vicpc believe that Emrakul and the Eldrazi are featuring prominently here because Wizards hasn’t yet found a place for them in MTG’s current story, stating:

“It’s arguably a sign she won’t come back for a while.”

MTG fans react to the Eldrazi returning

Excitement for Modern Horizons 3 has started to peak following the reveal of Emrakul, the World Anew. Fans were quick to ask after other Eldrazi titans, with Reddit user NeoMegaRyuMKII wondering:

“Does this mean we will get a new Ulamog and Kozilek?”

Their hopes were buoyed by Reddit user agiantanteater confirming:

“There was feature art showing the three titans so I would think so.”

With not long to wait before Modern Horizons 3 makes its June 2024 debut, we’re sure to see more of the Eldrazi in the months ahead. The chance to collect more of these colossal colorless creatures is sure to invite fans to crack more than a few Modern Horizons 3 packs.
