A tour through DC’s Silver Age, the end of Beast World, and the return of dead X-Men round out the best new comics for the week of January 31, 2024.

It’s a fifth week for comics, which used to mean a big event or something special. Nowadays, it usually means annuals or business as usual.

The fifth week is a plight surrounding the weekly nature of comics. With a schedule built around releasing new comics every Wednesday, you’d occasionally wind up with five Wednesdays in a month. With the extra publishing weight, publishers used to publish massive events like DC One Million or Amalgam Comics

This week does see some slightly lighter releases, but the companies are managing well enough. DC will release a couple of annuals while Marvel continues to build its massive X-Men event. Here’s what you should look for in January 31’s new comics.

Batman Superman World's Finest 2024 Annual
World’s Finest takes a trip through DC’s more classic eras in the 2024 Annual

Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2024 Annual

The main book is currently tied up in Return to Kingdom Come, which concludes its arc in February. That doesn’t mean the annual can’t have a little fun.

Though it sounds like at least one story will feature the notorious imp Mr. Mxyzptlk taunting Superman, the rest of the book sounds like it’s setting up the future of World’s Finest. With stories featuring Metamorpho, Bumblebee, and the Challengers, all signs point to this incredible book (which we named as one of the best of 2023) continuing its heartwarming exploration of Silver Age DC.

A WORLD TOUR OF THE WORLD’S FINEST! It’s the world’s finest annual! As the battle against Magog rages on Earth-22, Batman and Superman discover a surprising secret by way of the 5th dimension! Meanwhile, Metamorpho’s story picks up after the events of the Elementary arc as our hero journeys deep within an ancient tomb that may have a hidden, deadly connection to his secret origin! Plus, Batman recruits the Challengers of the Unknown for a top-secret mission, and a special, sizzling story stars the Teen Titans’ most buzzworthy member, Bumblebee! It’s a world tour of the World’s Finest in this first-ever series annual, curated by World’s Finest architect Mark Waid!

Avengers: Twilight #2
Captain America is back to fight Bullseye in Avengers: Twilight #2

Avengers: Twilight #2

The first issue of Avengers: Twilight has some heavy hits, with the death of Daredevil and the return of Captain America. Not to mention the reveal of Tony Stark’s son and the horror of Tony’s current state.

Zdarsky’s long-gestating Avengers epic has all the early hallmarks of an all-time classic. This issue sees a new take on Bullseye and is the first outing of a revived Captain America, so there’s no better time to get started on this dystopian future epic than now.

With the clock ticking to New Year’s Day, and the world against him, CAPTAIN AMERICA must build an army to save America! Will his surviving friends sign up, or is he going to have to lead the ragtag group called THE DEFENDERS against the expert military marksman known as BULLSEYE?

By Chip Zdarsky, Daniel Acuña, Cory Petit, & Alex Ross

Titans: Beast World #6
The Titans face a dark reflection of one of their own in the Beast World finale.

Titans: Beast World #6

There aren’t really words to describe how exciting it’s been to see the Titans finally take their rightful place. DC has teased the notion of a Titans-led universe and an aged-up Justice League since the late ‘00s, and seeing them at the center of a major event was a thrill.

Beast World definitely had more weight than anyone could have guessed, and its biggest twists – including the death of Beast Boy – are sure to have long-lasting repercussions. How will Raven cope with the return of her demon self? Is Beast Boy really dead? Is this all just secretly paving the way for a Justice League return? We’ll find out soon enough.

THE DC UNIVERSE MUST EVOLVE OR DIE IN THE BEAST WORLD FINALE! DR. HATE REVEALED! As Raven makes her final stand against the chaotic evil sorcerer, the Titans race against time to cure the world of the epidemic caused by Beast Boy. How far will the team go? How much will the friends sacrifice? Watch as the DCU is forced to evolve or die in this shocking conclusion!

By Tom Taylor, Lucas Meyer, Ivan Reis, Eduardo Pansica, Danny Miki, Júlio Ferreira, Brad Anderson, Romulo Fajardo Jr., & Wes Abbott

Powers Rangers Unlimited: The Morphin Masters #1
The Morphin Masters promises to expand the lore of Power Rangers as Darkest Hour continues.

Power Rangers Unlimited: The Morphin Masters #1

BOOM! has been quietly running a major epic with its Power Rangers event. Darkest Hour has reached a crescendo with the long-awaited confrontation between Lord Drakkon and Ranger Slayer, the story’s long-suffering, alternate-reality versions of Tommy and Kimberly

Morphin Masters will continue the expansion of the lore of Power Rangers. There’s been a ton of heavy-lifting done with the idea of what the Morphin Grid actually is and how it relates to the wider world of Power Rangers. With the return of long-time writer Ryan Parrott, this promises to be an issue for the ages.

Following the shocking events of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #116, an iconic character has entered The Grid, searching desperately for the Morphin Masters and the answers they might possess.

But as Dark Specter’s infection grows increasingly more dangerous… new revelations are uncovered that will shake the Power Rangers universe to its very core!

Iconic Rangers writer Ryan Parrott returns to the franchise alongside co-writer Rachel Wagner (Power Rangers, Rogue Sun) and artist Daniel Bayliss (Firefly).

Fans will not want to miss this key tie-in issue expanding the epic Darkest Hour event!

By Ryan Parrott, Rachel Wagner, Daniel Bayliss, Arthur Heli, Ed Dukeshire, & Toni Infante

Dead X-Men #1
X-Men return from beyond the grave to save mutants in Dead X-Men #1.

Dead X-Men #1

It wouldn’t be a week of comics without the promise of some more X-Men hijinks. Dead X-Men dives into the Rise of the Powers of X with a new team of X-Men comprised of dead heroes.

Cannonball, Prodigy, Frenzy, Dazzler, and Jubilee were the first casualties of the current X-Men narrative, killed by Nimrod just after they were elected to be the new X-Men. Dead X-Men sees them brought from beyond the grave as Xavier attempts to kill Moira X before her mutant powers activate. If they succeed, they’ll prevent the Orchis takeover of Earth, but at the cost of the mutant sanctuary of Krakoa

DEATH WAS ONLY THE BEGINNING! When the world turned against Krakoa, these five mutants lost their lives…but their mission as X-Men is just getting started. To preserve Xavier’s dream, they must accomplish the impossible—or die again trying! Spinning out from RISE OF THE POWERS OF X, discover…who are the DEAD X-MEN?!

By Steve Foxe, Bernard Chang, Jonas Scharf, Vincenzo Carratù, & Pere Pérez

Wolverine #42
Wolverine gets a grisly birthday gift in the next installment of Sabretooth War.

Wolverine #42

Sabretooth War kicked off in a truly grisly fashion, with Wolverine’s son used to spell out a bloody birthday message and versions of the original X-Men torn apart. Marvel’s clearly trying to capitalize on telling Marvel’s most violent Wolverine story, and so far, they’re pulling it off.

Still, it’s hard to deny this feels somewhat disjointed. Sabretooth War is running throughout Wolverine #50, but it’s all going down while Fall of the House of X decimates the X-Men and X-Force looks for Beast. How long until Wolverine is stretched too thin?

SABRETOOTH WAR—PART 2! VICTOR CREED and the SABRETEETH have big plans for LOGAN. See the war escalate under the claws of the many Creeds!

By Victor LaValle, Benjamin Percy, Cory Smith, Frank D’Armata, Cory Petit, Leinil Francis Yu, and Romulo Fajardo Jr.
