Horror franchises are a mainstay in our cinematic culture, and one of the best-known is James Wan’s The Conjuring series, which features none other than The Nun.
While the first Nun movie was met with mixed critical reception, the cast of the film has always been notable, and the demonic titular character has become somewhat of a horror icon in the past five years she’s been around. And thus, a sequel was inevitable.
So, with the sequel coming out today, here are all the major characters you need to know, as well as the actors that play said characters.

The Nun 2: Major cast & characters
The Nun 2 boasts some old and new faces, as the battle against the demonic Valak takes on its sophomore lap. Below we have listed all the major characters you need to know, as well as where you may have seen their actors before.
In regards to notable characters missing from the first movie, Demián Bichi’s Father Burke does not make an appearance, his character having died in between movies of unrelated causes. However, there are plenty of notable actors and characters that have replaced him, so let’s get into the list.
The Nun/Valak: Bonnie Aarons
Warner Bros.The Nun, otherwise referred to as Valak, is the demonic entity haunting this franchise. The sequel will touch upon a lot more about her past and future goals, as she continues to possess Maurice and cause death and destruction.
Bonnie Aarons, who plays Valak, is a veteran of playing scary figures in horror flicks. She is best known as the bum in Mulholland Drive, and also appears in The Princess Diaries franchise.
Sister Irene: Taissa Farmiga
Warner Bros.Sister Irene is our Final Girl of The Nun movies. As a Holy Woman who suffers from paralyzing visions, she is tasked with finding and fighting the titular Nun, and will no doubt have some fears about facing her again.
Taissa Farmiga is likely best known for her role in the anthology series American Horror Story, and can also be seen in The Final Girls and The Bling Ring.
Maurice/Frenchie: Jonas Bloquet
Warner Bros.Maurice is another returning character, who helped Irene defeat the Nun in the first movie. Now as the good-natured groundskeeper of the boarding school that Valak haunts, Maurice has no idea that he is the one possessed by the demonic creature.
Maurice is played by Jonas Bloquet, who can also be spotted in Father & Soldier, Working Girls, and Private Lessons.
Sister Debra: Storm Reid
Warner Bros.Sister Debra is a new character in the movie, but a welcome one. As a rebellious and reluctant new Nun in training, she agrees to help Sister Irene in her battle against Valak, despite her lack of strong religious faith.
Storm Reid has been making a name for herself in the past few years, appearing in A Wrinkle in Time, Euphoria, The Last of Us, The Invisible Man, and Missing.
Marcella: Anna Popplewell
Warner Bros.Marcella is a kind-hearted Irish teacher at the boarding school in France that Valak is terrorizing, where she lives with her daughter. She is somewhat of a love interest for Maurice, so naturally she gets caught up in the fray of his possession.
Marcella is played by Anna Popplewell, best known for her role in the Chronicles of Narnia movies, as well as Reign and The Little Vampire.
Sophie: Katelyn Rose Downey
Warner Bros.Sophie is Marcella’s daughter, who forms a close bond with Maurice, even making him friendship bracelets. However, she has trouble making friends her own age, being bullied by a number of her peers. And being young, she will of course be terrified by all the Nun events that are about to befall her.
Katelyn Rose Downey plays the role of Sophie, and she can also be spotted in The Princess and Clean Sweep.
Ed Warren & Lorraine Warren: Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga
Warner Bros.While they likely won’t appear for very long in The Nun 2, having only cameoed with archival footage in the first Nun movie, it would be sacrilege not to mention the main stars of the Conjuring franchise. This pairing come to prominence in the 1970s as paranormal investigators and demonologists, and are actually also based on real people.
Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga are pretty prominent actors, with Wilson appearing in the Insidious franchise and The Phantom of the Opera. As for Farmiga, she can also be seen in plenty of other horror content, with The Bates Motel and Orphan under her belt.
