Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players “horrified” by morbid Pokedex entry

Lechonk finds a Spoink in the Pokemon anime

Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players have learned the terrible fate that awaits one Pokemon, as outlined in its Pokedex entry.

The Pokedex in the Pokemon series paints a picture of a much darker world than the one seen in the game. The Pokedex has creepy jokes, references to murder, myths about kidnapping, and frank discussions about Pokemon hunting and eating each other.

In the Pokedex, Froslass is said to capture lost humans and Pokemon, turning them into living ice statues that adorn its lair. In the actual game, Froslass is just like any other Pokemon, with no creepy statue-making involved.

The Pokedex writers repeatedly target one Pokemon, as it’s constantly said to be suffering a terrible fate. This trend continues into Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, where it may one day perish in the fields of the Paldea region.

Spoink’s fate is revealed in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Pokedex

A user on the Pokemon Scarlet & Violet Reddit has posted their reaction to the discovery of Spoink’s fate, as it says that it will die if it stops bouncing on its tail. There’s no obfuscating the truth either: the word die is used in the Pokedex.

“Yea, and that’s not new, the dex has been mentioning that and how if it loses the pearl on its head it can’t bounce and dies since gen 3,” one user wrote, while another said, “How was I supposed to know hypnosis did that?” – An old man after his Drowzee used hypnosis accidentally killing a trainer’s Spoink.”

Spoink’s eventual demise has been a part of its Pokedex entry ever since it debuted in Pokemon Ruby & Sapphire. The Gen 9 Pokedex simply continues this tradition, ensuring modern children know what happens to their beloved pig if it stops moving for even a second.

It bears mentioning that the information in the Pokedex is often considered apocryphal, as pointed out by other users in the thread.

“If it makes you feel better, Spoink doesn’t always bounce in the anime and is fine,” one user wrote, “There are at least two episodes where the same silly Spoink loses its pearl, and Ash and the gang have to help it find it.”

“If you like the theory that the Pokedex was made by 10-year-olds and isn’t always accurate, there’s a bit of proof right there.”

Luckily, there’s no way to actually kill Spoink in any of the Pokemon games, as knocking it out or putting it to sleep won’t cause its heart to stop. This is just an instance of the Pokedex presenting a vision of a more awesome Pokemon game that we won’t officially get.
