New documentaries & true crime June 2024: Netflix, Hulu, Prime & more

Daisy Phillipson
Jim Jones, Anna Stubblefield, and Sherri Papini

From a deep dive into the Jonestown massacre to a new series on the Sherri Papini hoax, here’s your guide to the new true crime and documentaries hitting Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus, Max, and more in June 2024.

There have been some poignant entries to the true crime genre in 2024 so far. The Jinx Season 2 has dominated the documentary scene in recent weeks, with new revelations about Robert “Bob” Durst and the company he kept over the years.

Following on from Investigation Discovery’s Quiet on Set, the network released Fallen Idols, a docu-series on the allegations against Nick Carter and issues within the Carter family.

While Netflix continues to be the best streaming service for true crime, all platforms have something unique to offer, with plenty of real-life stories and shows making their streaming debut. So, here’s a rundown of all the new documentaries and true crime shows to mark in your calendar.

Top documentary and true crime picks for June 2024

Tell Them You Love Me (Netflix) — June 14

This Sky Original documentary is finally set to stream in the US. Directed by Nick August-Perna and produced by Louis Theroux under his Mindhouse banner, Tell Them You Love Me is a truly disturbing tale involving a controversial affair between white professor Anna Stubblefield and a non-verbal Black student, Derrick Johnson. The film touches upon numerous issues such as consent, gender, disability, and race.

Cult Massacre: One Day in Jonestown (Hulu) — June 17

Ever heard of the term ‘drinking the Kool-aid’? It originated from the Jonestown massacre, the 1978 mass murder-suicide of the Peoples Temple cult at the instruction of their leader, Jim Jones. As one of the most notorious cult cases in US history, Hulu and Nat Geo’s new docu-series is set to delve into the group’s descent with rare archival footage as well as interviews from witnesses and survivors.

Slave Play. Not A Movie. A Play. (Max) — June 20

Deep dive into Jeremy O. Harris’s award-winning 2018 Slave Play, examining his creative process as a playwright and the development of his groundbreaking stage production. The play itself centers on three interracial couples who go through “Antebellum Sexual Performance Therapy,” as the Black partners no longer feel sexually attracted to their white significant others. As well as unrivaled access into Harris’s work, it celebrates his creative devotion to pushing the boundaries.

Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini (Hulu) — June 20

Move over Tinder Swindler, as it’s time to delve into the world of Sherri Papini once more. If you’re a true crime fan, chances are you’re well aware of the intricacies of this case, which unfolded in 2016 when Papini seemingly went missing. Three weeks later, she was “set free” by her captors, who she claimed in early police interviews were “two Hispanic women.” However, as new details emerged, detectives noticed holes in her story, only to discover that she had faked the whole thing. Her deceitful and problematic actions landed her in prison, and is the subject of Hulu’s upcoming docu-series.

Worst Roommate Ever, Season 2 (Netflix) — June 26

We’ve all had a bad roommate experience at one point or another, but perhaps none were quite so bad as those detailed in Netflix’s Worst Roommate Ever. Each episode of the anthology docu-series examined a different case of tenants whose shocking and sometimes violent actions turned the lives of their victims into living nightmares. This month, the streaming service is bringing the show back for Season 2.
