With World of Warcraft: Season of Discovery poised to enter its second phase, players are calling on Blizzard to bring some big changes to plate, so the armor type remains competitive in more difficult content.

For those who don’t know, there are four types of armor in World of Warcraft – cloth, leather, mail, and plate. Season of Discovery is no exception, though it has added more options to the Classic formula in the gear department.

That said, plate is undeniably the worst option as the game heads into its second phase, largely because the best stat boosts are outstripped by armor pieces of other types. This means that classes that would traditionally wear plate are electing to use pieces made from other materials instead.

Now, many in the game’s community are calling on Blizzard to change that or risk the armor becoming entirely irrelevant moving forward.

WoW player begs Blizzard to “make plate viable” in Season of Discovery

In a post on Reddit, one player called on the developers behind Season of Discovery to make significant improvements to the plate armor items available in the game for Phase Two.

To be clear, though much of what players may be able to expect has been datamined, there will be plenty of loot in the game that players don’t yet know about. Whether plate is on their radar is unclear, but it’s a fair assumption that there will be at least some additional options for the classes that could benefit.

Though many were quick to agree with the player, some didn’t hold out much hope. One said: “I don’t think it will happen. Right now I’m just hoping for big physical hits in gnome so at least tanks take the plate items and don’t roll on leather/mail as well lol.”

Another added: “Yeah, I really don’t understand why Blizzard is trying to imitate the janky stat distribution as if it’s a beloved feature. Warriors running around in leather/mail/plate gear doesn’t add charm to the game, it just f**ks everyone else off because they’re now competing with an extra set of people.”

Whatever does happen, the competition for gear in the game’s endgame activities is likely to be fierce. The new raid adaptation of Gnomeregan is also likely to bring significant rewards. Whether that will include competitive plate armor remains to be seen.
