Michonne will return in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, so here’s what you need to know about the last time we saw her on screen.

It’s easy to forget that Danai Gurira’s Michonne only came into The Walking Dead during Season 2, since she ended up becoming one of show’s most important figures.

When she first stepped onto screen, her face obscured by a hood and brandishing a katana sword (with two pet walkers held by chains, mind you), we knew she was a keeper. Over the years, she became a valuable player in the main group of survivors, Rick’s confidant and lover, and mother to both Judith and Rick Jr.

She’ll be returning to TWD universe in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, so it’s good to know where her story was left at the end of the original series. Here’s everything you need to know!

What happened to Michonne in The Walking Dead?

At the end of The Walking Dead, Michonne spent a year trying to find Rick after coming across clues that he might be alive.

After Rick is believed to have died in Season 9, Michonne takes command of their group in Alexandria and continues to raise Judith, his daughter. Six years following his “death”, we learn that she was also pregnant with his baby, and has since had a son who she named Rick Jr.

Conflicts have arisen between the different surviving communities and Michonne, particularly between her and Maggie (who since left the Hilltop group). During Season 9, she and Daryl also end up having to lead the charge against a new threat: a group of walker skin-wearing survivors known as the Whisperers.

Ultimately, Michonne unites the different groups by bringing together the leaders from the various communities and apologizing for her tough security measures and rejecting their ongoing relationships.

However, this meeting ends with several character deaths at the hands of Alpha, the Whisperer’s leader, which Michonne ends up blaming herself for. After a long and treacherous journey, Michonne makes it back home to Alexandria.

Season 10 ended up being Gurira’s last official season. It continued with Michonne’s battle against the Whisperers, and saw her leaving her children behind with Daryl and the others in order to secure weapons for their ongoing fight.

During this time, she finds Rick’s boots, phone, and a drawing of her and Judith. Realizing Rick might be alive, she decides to embark on a solo journey into the wilderness to find him. Along the way, she encounters some survivors who she decides to help, remembering how Rick once did the same for her many years ago.

Michonne in The Walking Dead series finale

Michonne returned in The Walking Dead’s series finale, and was shown to still be on her quest to locate Rick.

She appears in the final episode doing what she does best: looking insanely cool. Michonne is alone again, and this time, she’s riding on horseback towards what looks like a magnificent horde of walkers.

So, as it stands, we last saw Michonne back to her old ways. She was alone, taking down walkers at every turn, all while searching for Rick based on some minor evidence that he might be alive.

The new series, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, will likely fill in the blanks as to what happened on her ongoing travels. If we’re lucky, it’ll also have the two reunite after battling the undead, villainous humans, and the rest of the world.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is coming to AMC on Sunday 25 February, 2024.
