Fans of Silk: Spider Society are outraged after it was announced the show will now cater more to its male viewers.

Though super hero movies have been gaining a lot more traction in terms of popularity in the media, female-led movies in the genre are far and few in between.

Whether it’s Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh in Black Widow or Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney in Madame Web, it seems like female-led super hero movies that cater more its female audiences aren’t exactly loved by critics, even if they’re loved by the fans the movie was made for.

And that’s why fans of the upcoming series Silk: Spider Society are now voicing their outcry that the show has been completely overhauled in favor of making the female-led show more in tune with its potential male viewers.

Silk: Spider Society may be targeting a “male-skewing audience”

According to a recent tip given to The Ankler, Silk: Spider Society, which is an upcoming super hero series set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video, let its entire writers’ room go. Only left showrunner Angela Kang (The Walking Dead) and one unnamed co-executive producer on board according to their sources.

Despite the Sony backed project being centered on Silk aka Cindy Moon, a Korean-American girl who was bitten by the same radioactive spider that gave Peter Parker his powers, it was reported that the show will is being “refocused with a more male-skewing audience in mind.”

While both Amazon and Sony have yet to comment on this drastic change to the show, a lot of fans of this character and her comic back story seem to believe that the fact that recent female-led super hero projects like Madame Web and The Marvels underperformed at the box office, it could’ve scared both studios from making another super hero project catered towards a female audience.

“Finally, a Spider-Man thing for the boys. It’s been too long. Exactly one whole thing wasn’t aimed directly at men and now they’re never going to do that again,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

Another Twitter user asked, “They’re just going to sexualize Cindy aren’t they?” which is a huge concern of Silk fans as Cindy is a Asian high school girl and that demographic is notoriously fetishized in Hollywood.

Below are some more strong reactions to the changes to Silk: Spider Society:

At this time, there’s no word on how much will be changed from the original Silk storyline in order to cater to its new target audience, but we’ll keep you update as more news breaks.
