Queen Bees, a 2021 comedy starring James Caan, has leaped near the top of the Netflix chart – but how old is the late actor in the film?

The movie, directed by Michael Lembeck and written by Donald Martin, has become an unlikely hit on the streamer over the past couple of days.

It was a box office flop upon its original release, grossing just $2.3 million against a $5 million budget, as well as having a low Rotten Tomatoes score – but people are clearly finding plenty to love.

Caan stars as Dan, a new resident at Pine Grove who strikes up a relationship with Helen (Ellen Burstyn), who recently moved in on her daughter’s say-so.

How old is James Caan in Queen Bees?

James Caan was 78 years old at the time of filming Queen Bees, while his character Dan is 80 in the film.

The movie was shot in 2018, before premiering on June 11, 2021, at which point Caan was 81 years old. The iconic actor died in July 2022 at the age of 82 after a heart attack, sparking a wave of tributes from fans of The Godfather, Thief, Brian’s Song, Elf, and more.

While the reviews for Queen Bees were mixed, Caan was near-universally praised for his performance. “Burstyn and Caan are so effortlessly charming together, you find yourself wishing they would be cast in a long-afterwards sequel to Same Time, Next Year,” Variety wrote.

The Independent said the star’s turn was “sweet and charming”, while Decider noted that Caan alone was enough to sell the movie.

“His scenes with Burstyn still have plenty of magic, and when they gaze into each other’s wet eyes with a feeling of longing and joy… well, I defy you not to get a little misty yourself,” Film Yap also wrote.

The official synopsis reads: “While her house undergoes repairs, fiercely independent senior Helen moves into a nearby retirement community – just temporarily. Once behind the doors of Pine Grove Senior Community, she encounters lusty widows, cutthroat bridge tournaments and a hotbed of bullying ‘mean girls’ the likes of which she hasn’t encountered since high school, all of which leaves her yearning for the solitude of home. But somewhere between flower arranging and water aerobics Helen discovers that it’s never too late to make new friends and perhaps even find a new love.”
