Daniel Day-Lewis surprised everyone with an appearance at the National Board of Review Awards, but director Martin Scorsese used the opportunity to tease the possibility of the two working on a new film.

The National Board of Review awards may not be as well-known as the Oscars to the general public, but the awards carry some big names nonetheless.

The awards ceremony is hosted by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, a New York-based organization with the goal of “ensuring the quality of films for generations to come.”

This year’s awards included some big names, but the Best Director award went to the legendary Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon. The nomination has some bigger ramifications, though, as it brought legendary actor Daniel Day-Lewis back into the spotlight, giving fans hope for a new collaboration.

Martin Scorsese teases a reunion with Gangs of New York star Daniel Day-Lewis

Day-Lewis, who retired from acting in 2017, made the surprise appearance at the event to present the Best Director award to Scorsese.

Scorsese seemed excited to see the Gangs of New York star and playfully teased the crowd with the idea of a third collaboration.

“We did two films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life, I must say. Maybe there’s time for one more,” Scorsese said from the dais to cheers from the crowd.

Daniel Day-Lewis is perhaps the most respected actor alive today. He’s retired from the craft twice, first leaving Hollywood after 1997’s The Boxer to become a shoe-maker in Italy.

It was Scorsese who convinced him to return for Gangs of New York. The duo had previously collaborated on 1993’s The Age of Innocence, which netted Scorsese Best Director nominations from the National Board of Review, Golden Globes, and Academy Awards.

Though he appeared in a few more films for the second phase of his career, such as the critically acclaimed There Will Be Blood and Lincoln, Day-Lewis would announce his second retirement prior to the release of his last film, 2017’s Phantom Thread.

Scorsese, meanwhile, has continued making headlines not just for his latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, but for his pushback on the comic book movie trend.
