Madame Web director S.J. Clarkson has addressed questions about its potential connection to the MCU and Sony’s Spider-Man films.

Sony Pictures’ Madame Web will swing into theaters on February 14, offering up an adventure wherein a clairvoyant paramedic must protect herself and others from an evil Spider-Man-like adversary.

Given that it’s the latest Spidey-themed film from Sony in recent years, many wonder if Madame Web bears any connections to Venom and Morbius.

A synopsis for the movie suggests Madame Web is separate from these projects, but fans can’t help but ponder the possibilities. What also remains a mystery is whether or not the Dakota Johnson-starring movie will connect to the MCU.

In an interview for Total Film Issue #347 (via GamesRadar), director S.J. Clarkson fielded questions about how the new film might connect to other cinematic universes. Of course, she couldn’t offer much in the way of concrete details, but the director shared enough of a tease to keep fans talking.

When asked the connected universe question, Clarkson merely said, “I’m really excited for you to see the film and the potential of what it could be, that’s for sure. But I would probably say watch this space.”

In other words, fan curiosities about the MCU and Spider-Man of it all may not be sated until Madame Web arrives in the next couple of weeks.

Though the film debuts fairly soon, there’s little in the way of hype surrounding it. And, so far, the blame is being placed on Madame Web’s marketing campaign.

It’s not projected to set the box office on fire, either. Early tracking for the spinoff indicates it’ll net around $25 million in its first week or so. But, who knows, maybe Madame Web will take the world by surprise?

Sony’s latest Spider-Man spinoff opens on Wednesday, February 14.
