With Dragon-type Pokemon appearing more frequently in the wild thanks to the latest event, Pokemon Go veterans are warning players to hold on to them, to avoid making a costly mistake.

Pokemon Go is littered (or Trubbish-ed) with events throughout the year, and the latest one known as the Pokemon Go Lunar New Year 2024 event is filling the streets with Dragon-type Pokemon to celebrate the Year of the Dragon in the Chinese Zodiac.

With rare creatures like Drampa added to Pokemon Go, and uncommon creatures like Gible, Axew, and more roaming around: it’s a fantastic time to bolster your library of beasts, especially if you like to walk on the wyvern side of life.

However, while it might seem like a great idea to start evolving any baby dragons like Gible into their powerful counterparts such as Garchomp, some Pokemon Go players are actually warning others to hold out for a short while, and for very good reason.

Pokemon Go players warn to hold onto Dragon Pokemon before upcoming event

Pokemon Go player u/dark__tyranitar has shared a post on Reddit, titled “Save Your Dragons” alongside a lengthy and informative explainer.

They share their advice in the post, saying “During the upcoming Carnival of Love event next week we are supposed to get 2 XL candy when evolving a pokemon. If you catch one of the now available dragons, like Gible or Bagon, SAVE IT.”

Afterwards they continue, adding “If you evolve them once during the event you will pay 24 total candy for 2 XL candy. Thats a lot better than 100 candy for 1 XL candy. Also if you have enough regular candy to evolve it twice, you’ll spend 123 regular candy total for 4 XL candy.”

It’s solid advice, but some other players are adding their thoughts in the comments, and not everyone agrees. One comment says, “I recommend this only if you have a lot of space, and bear in mind a lot of the Dragons have been CD’s after XL Candy was made a thing.”

Then the previous commenter adds, “Also don’t hold back on evolving good Gible or Bagon now while their relevant moves are available. CD Classics for them are probably a while off from being a thing.”

One pleased user backs up the post, saying “Yup, I’ve got a whole bunch of Noibat saved up!” While another person adds, “And transfer them via last spotlight event in Feb to earn biggest.”

It’s a great opportunity to earn some Candy if you want to power up your ‘mons, but if you’re into competitive battling it might not be best to hold onto Gible or Salamence.
