A must-have set for LEGO lovers and petrolheads, the retired LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van is still available at Amazon and Walmart. It comes at a price, though.

With the ID. Buzz, Volkswagen has introduced an electric — ahem — buzz to what’s arguably the German marque’s most famed line-up of vehicles. Yup, you guessed it. It is, of course, the Wolfsburg-based brand’s people carriers. However, none is arguably as sought after the original T1 from the 1960s.

Whatever you call it — Bulli, Transporter, Kombi, Microbus, or Hippie Van — the early-generation VW van has achieved cult status. It’s no wonder why, with the most significant reason being that it is synonymous with the counter-culture movement.

A T1 example featured on Bob Dylan’s album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, which comprises a collection of protest songs, and, painted with peace signs, served as the mode of transport for many rocking their way to the Woodstock Music Festival in 1969. The list goes on as to why the T1 has, to this day, a cult following. It’s a classic.

Over the years, LEGO has released (and still offers) a host of kits, such as the best LEGO classic cars, taking inspiration from motor vehicles. Yet, although these are desirable, the LEGO Creator T1 Camper Van is undoubtedly one of the most sought-after LEGO vehicles ever. It’s a must-have for pop-culture lovers and petrolheads alike.

Unfortunately, the brick-built Microbus was discontinued in 2020. However, it enjoyed a lifespan of almost a decade (nine years, to be precise). Yup, it was introduced in 2011. As such, there are still myriad of these models around. But where to find an example that hasn’t been unboxed?

Well, look no further. Amazon and Walmart both have stock of the LEGO Creator VW T1 Camper Van. However, although it might not be as rare as, say, the retired LEGO Star Wars Ultimate Collector Series models still available at Amazon and LEGO Ideas Yellow Submarine, it still comes with an increased price.

Indeed, the LEGO-reimagined VW T1 Camper Van will now set you back between 60% and 100% more than what it originally would. Back in the day, it’s asking price was $120, if you were wondering.

That said, considering that the VW T1 Camper Van-based LEGO set offers, it is arguably worth the premium. It’s an incredibly detailed piece of kit comprising various authentic elements.

Dressed in a two-tone red-and-white body hue, the LEGO replica of a 1962 example T1 Camper Van features the iconic V-shaped front end and ‘splittie’ safari windshield. There is also a pop-up roof, a curtain surround, and a roof rack. White-wall tires and a brick-built four-cylinder boxer motor are also present.

However, the authentic details don’t end there. Opening the doors (or removing the roof, for that matter), reveals a true-to-the-original interior. The cabin features everything you need for road-tripping across the country.

To name but a few, there is a rear bench seat, which can be folded down to become a bed, a folding table, and a closet. A neat addition (and in true Flower Power fashion), there’s a shirt with the words, “Make LEGO models, not war.”

Designed for LEGO builders aged 16 and up, this LEGO Creator set comprises 1332 pieces. The completed model measures five inches tall and 11 inches in length.
