In partnership with Focus Features, I Am Other, and the LEGO Group, a LEGO-style documentary based on the life of visionary artist Pharrell Williams is coming to theatres in 2024. Here’s what you can expect from ‘Piece by Piece’.

Pharrell Williams is a visionary. Of course, when thinking (or reading, in this instance) about Pharrell, what arguably jumps to mind first is the remarkable career this singer-songwriter and record producer has had — and is still having — in the music industry.

However, since starting out in the 1990s, the 13-time Grammy Award winner has done (and achieved) so much more. The list of projects he has worked on is exhaustive, to say the least.

To name but a few, he has produced several films, including ‘Hidden Figures’ (for which he received an Academy Award nomination, no less), and series. He also narrated Universal’s remake of ‘The Grinch’.

In addition, the Virginia-born star is an entrepreneur, philanthropist, and fashion designer. What’s more, in 2023, he was named the new Menswear Creative Director at Louis Vuitton.

So, considering Pharrell’s remarkable career thus far, surely a documentary about his life should be a must-see. Fortunately, there is a biopic about the 50-year-old coming.

When does the Pharrell Williams LEGO movie come out?

The Pharrell Williams LEGO movie is scheduled to release on October 11, 2024. There’s currently no word on when it’ll launch on streaming services, or which it’ll be available on after its theater run.

But don’t expect it to be a traditional documentary. Indeed, for the movie, Pharrell had something up his sleeve. Wanting to tell his story piece by piece in a way that will spark the imaginations of audiences, Pharrell decided the film must be made in LEGO format. How cool is that?

Named ‘Piece by Piece’, the upcoming movie is billed as an unparalleled motion-picture experience that captures the magic and brilliance of Pharrell’s creative genius. According to LEGO, “‘Piece by Piece’ defies genres and expectations to transport audiences into a LEGO world where anything is possible.”

In addition, Pharrell is one of the producers, alongside Mimi Valdés, Shani Saxon from I Am Other, and Neville and Caitrin Rogers. Jill Wilfert and Keith Malone from the LEGO Group are the executive producers. The Focus Features documentary was directed by Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville.

Focus Features Chairman Peter Kujawski said:

“Pharrell Williams is a true trailblazer, whose influence across music, art, and fashion continually reshapes global culture with an undeniable sense of joy.

“In partnering with the inimitable Morgan Neville and the limitless creativity of the LEGO brand, his visionary spirit comes to life in a wholly unique and uplifting way that will inspire everyone to dance, to sing, and to use their voice to build the world they want to see brick by brick, and piece by piece.”

Director Morgan Neville added:

“Five years ago, Pharrell Williams approached me with the idea of helping him tell his story through LEGO animation.

“It was one of those rare moments where I knew in a second that this was a journey I wanted to go on.

“I’m grateful to our partners at Focus Features and at the LEGO Group for their belief in our crazy mission.

“We assembled an incredible team of creative collaborators to help make a new type of film. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

The focus of the film, Phrarrel Williams also stated:

“When I had this crazy vision to tell this story through LEGO bricks, I couldn’t have imagined a better partner than Morgan. He is a legend.

“I’m honored to share this with the world and bring people into my universe.

“Building with LEGO bricks encourages us to follow our imagination. Who would’ve thought that playing with these toys as a kid would evolve into a movie about my life?

“It’s proof that anyone else can do it too.”
