Sam Smith
Quetzalcoatl

The Quetzalcoatl Talon is an essential item for a side quest in the opening few hours of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Here’s where to find the elusive beast and gain Quetzalcoatl’s Talon.

When you flee Kalm and arrive in the Grasslands during Chapter 2 of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, you’ll soon become acquainted with a nearby farming community and be asked to complete some side quests for them. You should do these quests, as each one helps teach you about the game’s mechanics and will give your party some essential skills and gear to continue your journey.

However, you’ll soon hit a stumbling block during the quest ‘Where the Wind Blows’ when it comes to obtaining the Quetzalcoatl Talon item. Below, we’ll explain how to get your hands on one, and spoiler warning, it involves slaying a mighty Quetzalcoatl to snag one of the coveted Talons. The beast also isn’t going to go down without a fight, and you’ll need to complete a range of tasks before it emerges.

Quetzalcoatl is no pushover.

How to get a Quetzalcoatl Talon

Before you can begin the ‘Where the Wind Blows’ quest in Chapter 2 of the Grasslands region of FF7 Rebirth, first you’ll need to have spoken to Chadley and begun his World Intel quests. You’ll also need to have obtained the Transmuter Chip item and have access to a Chocobo.

After a little while of doing quests and World Intel objectives in the Grasslands, you’ll learn that Shinra has pulled its troops away from Kalm, so you’re free to go back and explore the town in safety. You’ll need to do a little coming and going between the friendly Inn Owner and the Ranch as you complete side quests, but you’ll soon be directed toward the Windmill and the quest giver, Mildred.

You’ll need to find some ingredients to transmute the components to fix the Windmill. Most of these, like Iron Ore and Lea Titaniumare, are easy to find lying around and Beast Bones be farmed by killing Elphadunks. But for a Quetzalcoatl Talon, we’re going to need to activate some Lifestream Crystals.

There are four in total that will need to be scanned and you can find their locations by activating the Towers for them to show on your map, then following the owl that appears and guides you to them when you’re nearby. Once all four Lifestream Crystals have been activated, you’ll be invited to hunt and battle the Quetzalcoatl by Chadley.

This will trigger the ‘Classified Intel: Winged Lacertilian of Yore’ quest, which will see you travel to the location marked on your map, then press Triangle to start the battle with Quetzalcoatl.

How to defeat Quetzalcoatl

Quetzalcoatl will be level 22 when the battle begins, so aim to be somewhere similar for a chance at beating the creature. As Quetzalcoatl is a flying enemy, consider bringing characters with ranged attacks like Barret and Aerith for this battle, then way the enemy can’t fly out of reach.

We also recommend having your party summon Shiva as soon as you can, as Quetzalcoatl is weak against Ice magic. You can also pelt the creature with Blizzard to stun and pressure it, buying you time to stagger it and perform Limit Breaks when available.

Once the beast falls, you’ll be awarded with a Quetzalcoatl Talon. Now use this to craft the Windmill Parts and return them to Mildred. You’ll then need to return to the Inn Keeper in Kalm to finish the quest. You’ll also get an opportunity to deepen your friendship with Red XIII here and learn a little bit more about Shinra’s horrific SOLDIER program.
