Warzone devs promise “taps” change in ranked play update

Warzone ranked play developers Treyarch have promised a fairly significant update to the game in a future update, as they seek to eliminate the abundance of “taps” across Fortune’s Keep that may be artificially inflating SR.

Ranked dropped in Warzone alongside the launch of Season 2, coming with the Fortune’s Keep Resurgence map at the same time.

It’s a whole different ranked experience for Warzone players, who have only ever played it on the big map, but Ranked Resurgence is a huge change of pace, both literally and figuratively.

However, players quickly realized that there’s one easy way to help boost their SR, and that’s with “taps” — which may soon be a thing of the past.

What are taps in Warzone?

In Warzone ranked, you get SR (Skill Rating) points for kills and assists, as well as where you place in a match.

Players quickly noticed, though, that you also get additional SR for shots on players that are already downed, prompting them to start “tapping” opponents who had already been downed to earn themselves a little extra SR, even if they didn’t get the down originally.

It became a divisive topic among competitive players, and many called for the removal of taps — and they might finally be getting their wish.

Treyarch promise “taps” change

In a post made on February 14, Treyarch addressed the situation: “In a future update, we will adjust how Kill & Assist SR is awarded when engaging with downed enemies to mitigate “tap” gameplay and increase competitive integrity of the SR system…

“Players who didn’t damage the eliminated player shortly before they were downed will instead earn Squadmate Kill SR when their teammates down and eliminate an enemy. In the same future update, we’re granting Squadmate Kill SR regardless if a player is dead or alive.”

They revealed the following changes were made:

  • Only the following players will receive Kill & Assist credit when a player is eliminated:
    • The player who downed the eliminated player.
    • Players who damaged the eliminated player shortly before they were downed.

They added that “this change is being made to ensure the competitive integrity of Kill & Assist SR by removing the ability for players to ‘tap’ downed enemies to overinflate their SR gains.”

When exactly this future update remains to be seen. They could be looking way ahead to Season 3, which will be in early April, or perhaps the Season 2 Reloaded update which will be sometime in March, and perhaps a more desired timeframe for ranked players.
