CoD may be going fully open world, with a new report Black Ops Gulf War and beyond will make the switch to this revised campaign structure.

While Call of Duty is mostly known for its explosive multiplayer and coop modes, its campaign portion has an avid fanbase. The normally linear structure has filled a niche in the hearts of many, with blockbuster moments many still talk about to this day.

As time has passed, the franchise has experimented with the campaign’s formula, straying away from what made its niche. 2023’s MW3 suffered immensely because of that, with the new “Open Combat Missions” blasted for being “Warzone with cutscenes.”

It seems the experimentation phase isn’t over, as a new report indicates Black Ops Gulf War’s campaign may see the transition to a fully open-world title and that future titles will do the same.

Black Ops Gulf War and beyond to adopt open-world campaigns

Black Ops Gulf War is reportedly the CoD title of 2024, and with that comes a massive report from a popular source, Insider Gaming.

According to Insider Gaming, Black Ops Gulf War will feature an open-world campaign. However, unlike MW3’s campaign, Gulf War’s open world has been assembled via new assets. Raven Software is reported to head this experience, and much like previous Black Ops titles, series’ standouts like Adler will return and be a part of the team.

As for the gameplay loop, it’ll be more akin to Far Cry than CoD. Players will navigate the open map and fast travel points will ease the back-and-forth nature of traveling. There will also be a few linear missions, although it’s unknown how many, according to the report.

The report concludes that Black Ops 2025 will also adopt a similar strategy, as a method of “streamlining development.” If true, Black Ops 2025 is pitched to have different biomes and map locations for players to explore.

Time will tell if this proves to be true or not. With CoD being one of the more prolific titles, and a high target for leaks galore, it’s possible the upcoming months will reveal the validity of these reports.
