My Hero Academia’s ending is “interesting”, says anime director

Sadly, My Hero Academia is heading towards a conclusion soon for both the manga and anime, and people involved in the latter know what’s coming already.

My Hero Academia coming to an end isn’t a shock. At some point Deku was going to face Shigaraki, causing a battle between the All For One and One For All quirks for overall supremacy. This became a sure thing as soon as All Might passed the mantle to Deku, and creator Kōhei Horikoshi has been inching us towards that on the anime show and manga ever since.

More recently, we entered the Final Saga, putting an even finer point on what’s coming. The manga is still some chapters ahead of the anime, but they’ll both be in the endgame as of My Hero Academia Season 7.

Kenji Magasaki, Chief Director on My Hero Academia for Studio Bones, knows what’s coming, and he’s intrigued.

My Hero Academia director knows how the show will end

Speaking during the Studio Bones anniversary documentary on Crunchyroll, Bones 25: Dreaming Forward, Magasaki confirmed that he knows the ending. “I’ve heard from the author, Mr. Horikoshi, how the series will end,” he says. “It’s interesting, so I’m already excited to see how it’ll be animated.”

Obviously, his answer is vague, but it sounds like whatever will happen might be a creative challenge to make into animation. Studio Bones has demonstrated time and again how strong and versatile it is in My Hero Academia, turning large, quick sequences into stunning scenes that gives all the characters and their powers a chance to shine.

Between the anime series and the corresponding movies — moving onto the fourth installment this summer — My Hero Academia has been consistent in both being true to the manga and doing so with grace and vigor. It’s remarkable, really, and we should expect no less about the swansong, whenever that arrives.

Personally, I’m hoping for later, rather than sooner, so Magasaki can hold onto his excitement for now. Check out our list of the best anime like Solo Leveling if you want something to watch while we wait for Deku’s return.
