Bong Joon-ho’s black comedy thriller has been praised and binged by many – but now Parasite has been knocked off the Letterboxd top spot by a 2023 movie.

For those unfamiliar with the movie app, social media channel Letterboxd allows its users to log, review, and list their favorite films of all time and most recent watches.

As a result, Bong Joon-ho’s widely acclaimed Parasite has dominated the top spot for Most Popular Film in recent memory, having racked up a total of 1.9 million likes across the platform.

However, its lengthy lead has now been challenged by a new 2023 movie, moving Parasite into second place.

Parasite gets knocked off first place on Letterboxd by Barbie

South Korean black comedy thriller Parasite has been knocked off the top spot in Letterboxd’s Most Popular Film list and has officially been replaced with Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie.

Starring Margot Robbie in the titular role, the movie has been logged on the app a total of 2.8 million times, with an additional 1.2 million likes. On average, Barbie ranks at a 3.9-star rating.

With Bong Joon-ho’s movie now in second place, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Fight Club, and Joker each make up the places that follow.

“How do you measure ‘popularity’ if not ‘number of users who logged the film’? What are the numbers you look at? Please I need to know,” one fan questioned, with another responding: “Basically, the metric used is how many times it’s been interacted, reviewed, watched, listed, or viewed in the most recent amount of time. For example, 3.4 million users have seen Parasite in the past 4 years but 2.8 million users have seen Barbie in the past 6 months.”

The adjustment in the list has divided opinion among fans, with some particularly surprised to see Barbie faring so well.

“I can comfortably say that I will never (and I mean never ever) watch Barbie. There are those that love it (which is fine) but for me personally, it’s an abomination of the highest order,” one fan stated.

“Didn’t even know Parasite was the most popular film, I thought it was Interstellar,” another weighed in.

“I liked Barbie a lot, it was smart and funny, cast great, writing great, directing great, songs were great. But this is a damning indictment of where we are culturally, a third fan argued.
